D&D 5E Where are the Real Dragons?

According to Morrus in this thread, innate spellcasting for dragons is presented as an option in the MM if you don't want to use the monsters-with-class-levels rules.

D&D 5E Where are the Real Dragons?

Mostly agreed, SeveredHead. I've usually made my own dragon stats in 3.X because every dragon being a mage is is so divorced from the source material I prefer. I'm glad to see it as optional rather than required for the default dragons.

D&D 5E [Guidance] What, +1d4 to every check ever?

I think the raising DCs fix doesn't hit the real heart of the objection to guidance, which is the tedious, repetitive casting. If the +1d4 bonus was a problem, though, raising DCs to compensate and maintain challenge is the farthest thing from punitive. It's a big part of the DM's job to...

D&D 5E What's one thing that pleasantly surprised you, and one thing that disappointed you about the PHB?

Running Savage Worlds XD I actually really like Small races with no Strength penalty... if they're explicitly magical races. One of my preferred kinds of gnome, for example, would be Small with either no Strength penalty or a Strength bonus because they are stony, earth-fey folks. But for...

D&D 5E What's one thing that pleasantly surprised you, and one thing that disappointed you about the PHB?

I was pleasantly surprised by all the fun options available. I hadn't expected to be quite as impressed. I was disappointed in the mechanical treatment of halflings and gnomes. When you have a 3-foot-tall, 40-pound character with the same Strength score as the 6'5" human warrior, wielding...

    D&D 5E Polearm Master feat...where's my spear?

Given the base d6 damage on the 5E spear, I think it's meant as a fairly small weapon that you might not be able to bludgeon effectively with. That being said, I can't think of a reason not to house rule otherwise if you think your players will want to use the spear with that feat.

February : What are you reading?

I hate having to come to grips with that question. On the one hand, I have an occasional grasp at brilliance. On the other hand, it's hardly consistent enough to give myself a hand about.

February : What are you reading?

Mote is awesome. I haven't read the sequel through. It just didn't grab me as much. I should read that again soon.

February : What are you reading?

I re-read Zelazny's amazing Lord of Light, and the first of the Merle Corey Amber books. I just finished a re-read of Saberhagen's excellent Complete Book of Swords and am partway through the first Book of Lost Swords: Woundhealer's Story. Good memories. Farslayer howls across the world, For...

    Jack Vance

[i]The Miracle Workers[/c] is likewise incredible. I love the way he mingles SF and fantasy. In fact, I love that about a lot of the SF from that era.

I highly recommend the Demon Princes series. Those are just fabulous adventures. Lyonesse is also amazing.

Pathfinder 1E Paladin Weapon Bond for two weapons

I dig the idea of having it as a set.

January : What are you reading?

So I had an excellent haul at a library sale. I picked up an omnibus of the first three Vlad Taltos books, the first of MANLY WADE WELLMAN's Silver John books, the first of Zelazny's Merlin of Amber series, a couple L'Amour novels I didn't have, McCullough's 1776, and the first volume of The...

Pathfinder 1E Paladin Weapon Bond for two weapons

I'm with Ramaster. Compare what he's getting to what a two-handed fighter gets; he's getting a couple points of extra damage and the ability to split his attacks instead of the higher attack bonus of two-handed fighting, and he's spending feats to do it. I'd just give him full boosts on both...

I'm burning through Louis L'amour stories. Just read A Meeting at Falmouth, which is amazing. The protagonist is

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reactions (SPOILERS)

A minor point - the Necromancer was widely known and feared before Gandalf investigated him and discovered his identity. Thorin ponders attacking him once the Lonely Mountain is reclaimed, and Gandalf warns him off. So, Bolg's going to be in the films? Interesting. I wonder why Jackson kept...

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reactions (SPOILERS)

I think it's a good thing Jackson's combining the characters of Azog and Bolg into just Azog. It would feel odd to have Azog in the flashback to the War of Dwarves and Orcs, play him up as a badass and the hated enemy of the dwarves, and then in the Battle of the Five Armies go, "Oh yeah, and...

What if other adaptations got the "hobbit" treatment?

I'm certain that some of what I remember is in supplemental materials. I am a big Tolkien fan and it's sometimes hard to separate.

What if other adaptations got the "hobbit" treatment?

The dwarves in The Hobbit are supposed to be badasses. Many of them are veterans of the War of Dwarves and Orcs, and Thorin got his second name, Oakenshield, from taking up a tree branch to fight with after his shield was broken in battle.

    [November] What are you reading?

Cold Days was AMAZING. Everything that was a bit flat in Ghost Story is back in spades. Awesome.
