    D&D 5E The 5E* Wishlist

I went back to 1st AD&D after 4th came back, and these are the things that would make me consider actually playing a new version: 1. Make combat resolve in far less time. Like 1/4 the time it takes in 4th edition. 2. Put all of the weird non-traditional stuff like tieflings and dragonborns in...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

I'm sorry if I'm not being very clear. Those limitations you are talking about are exactly what I mean - magic is only limited if the author limits it. What you are talking about is a way in which the author limits it. Now - why does he do it? Because otherwise there is no tension in the...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

I think that magic people in literature can sometimes create destruction on a far larger scale: going so far as bringing ruin to entire cities (or more!) in a short amount of time. It all depends on what the story needs to have happen. A roundhouse kick, however, can only do so much before it...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

Yeah - exactly! ...and boy does Conan seem to get just the right kind of luck at just the right time in almost every story? It's almost magical! :p Magic does have the unique capability to break with real world conventions that would break our suspension of disbelief otherwise though. That's...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

:D That's funny stuff. I was referring more to conflict than to setting components though. I don't think that anyone would disagree that challenge should be more than illusory, which is the issue I was discussing regarding magical as a solution for every problem. ~~~~~~~~ Plane Sailing - I...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

For some reason that actually kind of reminds me of the domain/kingdom/stronghold running rules that have popped up in various editions, but with a very different focus and goal.

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

I think mostly what I'm saying is that fiction operates on a very different dynamic that doesn't really apply to D&D from a strict rules perspective - in what I consider to be good writing magic serves the narrative, rather than being a tool for resolution, or else it becomes deus ex machina and...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

There is no balance problem in fantasy literature because you have to look at how conflict is framed and how narrative is constructed. Ultimately, magic will do whatever the author needs it to do, so the real question is not how power is balanced, but rather what authors have needed magic to do...

    Imix and the fire grue

Hello everyone. In Monster Manual 3, the entry for Imix and related cultists keep referring to fire grues. I can't find the fire grue stats anywhere (including the compendium), nor is there a correction in the errata. Am I overlooking something or are they missing?

Is the Unearthed Arcana SRD online?

I think the life of the creator is too long for copyrights. That could potentially tie something up for 50, 60 years or more. By the time it becomes public domain it likely has lost all relevance, so even having copyright last only for the life of the creator still destroyes the positive...

Is the Unearthed Arcana SRD online?

That was awesome. Someone should write up an rpg where all of the books are written in that style. The title of each chapter would also have to be like this: "Chapter 1: In which the ability scores Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma are described as well as...

Is the Unearthed Arcana SRD online?

But by licensing material out under the OGL, the publisher actually is flat out telling people that they are free to print it out and sell (or give away) the open content. It's right there in the license. Every book published says this explicitly, whether or not it says so in a redundant FAQ...

Is the Unearthed Arcana SRD online?

Do you think the Green Ronin pocket phb breaks the spirit of open-game? How about the folks selling the d20 SRD in pdf format?

Is the Unearthed Arcana SRD online?

As I understand it, a "simple request with a yes/no answer" is a verbal contract that is recognized by law, at least in the US. Such a verbal contract in this situation, as you described it, would be licensing the material for use. Thus it's a license and, granted the difficulty of proving it...

Is the Unearthed Arcana SRD online?

If you contact them for permission, then the whole point of the open gaming license is defeated. You are essentially negotiating a new license, which you can do with any standard copyrighted stuff.

The State of ENWorld (too important to go to Meta)

Hi RangerWickett, I'm not very active here much these days and I used to be maybe some 8 months or so back. Mostly it was just a shift of interest. I'm interested more in non-d20 games these days and I spend a little bit of time at the Forge ( www.indie-rpgs.com ), but mostly just lurking...

    Deep Water and Shoals II

Vemuz pats the side of the shark, looking up and down it's length to get a better feel for it's size, now that it's no longer moving. "Excellent job, hand. We'll work some more on your technique later. You've got a good hand at the harpoon! For now, though, take the night off. I'll take...

Getting a Green dragon out of a lake of acid

Point 1: It's not just acid, it's water mixed with acid, right? Would a fire elemental really be safe in there? Point 2: Trying to boil down around 30,000+ cubic feet of water by having a fire elemental stand on a shield will take a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long...

It's important to know why this person died. Why?

He was assassinated as part of a political plot or because he knew a secret. There are other people likely to be assassinated soon for the same reason. The PCs need to know how he was assassinated so that they can help prevent the next assassination.
