    Why won't you switch?

Honestly, I don't know if I will switch or not. There have been a number of things I have misunderstood regarding 4E, and there have been a few things that I learned and liked about 4E. Thus, my presence on this part of the boards. However, as others have stated, 4E really is more like an...

    D&D 4E 4e With No Casters?

Regarding "what 4E characters are"....we really don't know yet. Sure, we have hints and some overall ideas, but I really don't think we have enough of an idea of what each class encompasses to make such definitive statements. Thus, I still have to "think" in somewhat 3.5 terms. That being...

    Magic Items for Lycanthropes

First thing that comes to my mind...I would tell the player that's part of the downside of playing a lycanthrope. Kinda sounds like a fighter-rogue complaining about his penalty to sneaking around in full-plate. Sure, the fighter-rogue can sneak around...when he takes that armor off. Off the...

    D&D 4E 4e With No Casters?

Okay. This is what I've been waiting for. Versatility, options, creative uses of the game without having to really spend time house ruling things. I've already pre-ordered the set of the corebooks, and now I don't regret it. Ugh. I guess I can't have everything. I know a fighter in...

Making Magic Items without Spending XP

That's not a bad approach. Some details I might change here or there (like the 6 gaming week part), but overall, not a bad idea. Similar to you, I don't like the idea of players spending XP to cast spells or create magical items. The route I took was the optional Power Components rule, and I...

    Duelists, anyone?

Are we limiting the discussion to only the Duelist PrC?....or are we also talking about any characters that feel/look/act like duelists? If I'm looking for "optimal builds" ...or... the ability to stand toe-to-toe with a dragon...then...no. It's obvious that a couple of small, thin blades and...

    Anybody using Benign Transposition?

I love it and use it a lot. I'm playing a Rogue 5/Wizard 1, and I always have it memorized for various emergencies. Sometimes I need to sneak in somewhere...then...Pop! Our tank is suddenly in there to beat down while I lead the rest of the party in. Or sometimes....scouting ahead turns bad...

    The Death of Simulation

After some searching and sifting through an older thread heated up over the Christmas Tree & Ring Reqs.... I don't know. Maybe there are new mechanics in 4E that would make the ring-deal more sensible. Still....level-based seems to gamey and arbitrary. I prefer some sort of limit or...

    The Death of Simulation

Again...not sure which label I should apply to myself, so here is my entry to the take on dwarves: Me: The book says Dwarves get a -2 charisma. It is pretty interesting to say that dwarves are surly, sometimes belligerent, and generally just not the friendliest lot. -2 Charisma makes...

Opinion: PoL and high tiers do not fit in the long run

Okay.....so Monte Cook made a modern World of Darkness by using D&D rules.... ....and WotC is turning D&D into a fantasy-era World of Darkness? Maybe that is a bit snarky, but have I really read the one thing abut 4E I like....totally incorrectly? So the default setting for any game is...

    The Death of Simulation

I'm not sure if I really fit within the "Simulationist" group, or if a third group exists: Storytellers. In essence, if some random rule exists that works or does not work with other rules....I'm not here to call out its realism or its importance as a game balance and game play factor. I want...

Will we see more third party products to add depth to monsters outside combat?

I totally agree! Except for the fact that you had mixed feelings about the Pit Fiend entry. I really hope the Monster Manual has more information than they leaked to us here. It felt like I was reading a D&D Minis statcard; not an entry for an exciting, scary, monumental antagonist that can...

Opinion: PoL and high tiers do not fit in the long run

Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms....true....not PoL as written in the books, but certainly could be employed with a PoL tool by any DM. However, Dark Sun and especially Planescape were PoL right out of the box. Heck...if Planescape was not PoL, I don't know what ever could be!

    The Death of Simulation

Well, I'll reference back to my first post in this thread. This is a fantasy game that requires a bit of suspension of disbelief. However, we all have different degrees of this. The game should support a flexible enough system to support mine AND yours with some limited twealing. To answer...

    The Death of Simulation

Actually, that can be easily explained....in terms of my gaming style. It might not apply to yours, which is cool. We are not forced to play by each other's styles. Aside from seeing the really annoying precedent in Neverwinter Nights (where I'd walk around with a +3 longsword that was...

Opinion: PoL and high tiers do not fit in the long run

I'm not picking on the person who started this thread; nor am I jabbing at anyone else here....but....I think a lot of people have missed the point of the Points of Light concept. PoL is not an actual setting - it is a method and tool for DMs and writers to use. Start on a small local level...

    The Death of Simulation

Well, if I had to label myself, this would firmly entrench me with the Simulationist crowd. Unless, of course, there is something in the game that would give some reason - from more of a character's perspective - why this phenomenon exists. Wait....I guess that is still simulationist. But, I...

    The Death of Simulation

If 4E forces any of us into a particular style of playing as much as this statement seems to look down at any particular player's individual desire for gaming how they want...then 4E will really be a dog of a boring game. Let's put all these lables (simulationist, gamist, blah blah blah) aside...

    Is it possible.

I know this starts to wander into house-rule territory, but I have a solution for you. Regarding price/cost to create in gold pieces...I'd go by the book guidelines. Conceptually, it is a simple and straightforward item. Plus, I'd really look at the sidebar on page 288 of the DMG. It...
