    D&D 5E 5th Edition and The Rules

I like what I see of 5E, other than the book covers, I like its modularity. The #1 most important thing about 5E is you can run it without minis. Minis are a dealbreaker for RPGs in my book.

D&D 5E A viable game and the vicious edition cycle

I disagree with those saying Gary was not good at business. You would not be posting on this forum were that the case. My sense, and I have read every forum post of his, is that he was too trusting, but an excellent strategist and businessman, especially where D&D was concerned. When he...

    D&D 5E Weak Saving Throws

Right, and I wouldn't assume you weren't familiar with old-school. I was referring to a broader split in gamers - those comfortable with house ruling and those who would prefer not to. I haven't played enough d20 to have known about this concern. I think I grok the situation now - are we...

    D&D 5E Weak Saving Throws

True, and I'm in that camp. However, this seems ok to me. Those who prefer a latter style need that system solidity that someone like myself finds alien. I look at 5e as a supplement to AD&D, or, 5e as the new base supplemented by TSR editions. For instance, if I find the 5e saves problematic...

    D&D 5E Firing Into A Melee

I imagine , since missiles in melee is so common, and central to most non-frontline characters, it might be tedious rolling disadvantage that much. I'm all for streamlining the advantage mechanic frequency, so this simple AC adjustment is fine by me. It also probably stacks (or works in concert...

    D&D 5E Firing Into A Melee

This seems exactly the sort of thing the disadvantage mechanic is for.

    D&D 5E 5e Basic Rules poll

I skimmed the basic rules, and like what I see overall. Been playing since '84. Sure, there's stuff I'd change if DMing it. But what struck me about 5e is its compatibility. I see no problem in using a 1e or 2e surprise/initiative, or even changing it based on circumstance - size of battle and...

D&D 5E Have they gone a little overboard with Advantage/Disadvantage?

Ah, you have me at a disadvantageB-) As I have multiple-edition personality disorder. 1. +4 to hit vs. prone 2. +1 or 2. Depends on circumstance - grade, weapon length, time of day... 3. That's always been a -4 as far as I recall. 4. I don't use minis. Probably a +1 or 2, - shield depending on...

D&D 5E Is Anyone Unhappy About Non-LG Paladins?

I'm not opposed to it. People have been making non-LG Paladins in D&D ever since there was a Paladin class. Might as well provide support in the rules. That doesn't mean I have to allow the LE pally IMG. I don't. But I think classes and races should officially be the sandbox they have always been.

D&D 5E Have they gone a little overboard with Advantage/Disadvantage?

It is overdone. It gets quite fiddly remembering all these instances of extra dice rolling. A simple modifier, as in the original rules, is far more elegant - I will be using original rules as the base whenever 5e gets too dice-fiddly. (I do like the adv/disadvantage mechanic, just not as a...

D&D 5E What does this photo say to you? [Project: Morningstar)

The photo says to me: these guys like their tablets. it also says: where are the women? it doesn't say paper & pencil is going away, because for many, p&p is far and away more efficient and simple

D&D 5E Vote for your favourite 5E cover art!

I think the core 3 are a miss. They're cool though. Too loud for core book covers to me, but then this is D&D.... Fav is Rise of Tiamat - awesome pic that is

    OD&D The Beauty of OD&D

The " full circle" of class options and skills leading us back to 3 classes with no skills is insightful. There is a tendency for NWPs, Feats, Powers, and Skills in general to become as much about defining what a PC can't do, as what a PC can, this also being a complex relationship between...

    what does Orc+Elf equal?

I would just have this PC be a unique creature, resultant of a perverted wizard's experiments. Roll 4d6, drop low for stats, arrange as desired, +2 STR, -1 INT, -1 CHA. Full infravision, 1/2 elf abilities -

    D&D 5E What I Miss From 1st Ed

I do like the separate mu, illusionist, cleric, and druid spells, even with their overlap. I like different XP charts. I love High Gygaxian but I don't miss any of it, since I play in a vibrant group (with their kids also), and run a 1E game myself. I will mine 5E for ideas, inspiration...

    What are your core races?

    All of them
  19. M

    What are your core races?

All PHB D&D races are core, none should ever be dropped. I would also add many monster races. Present them as a 2-3 page matrix with basic modifiers, age/height/weight, basic abilities and not much else. 2-3 sentences on each, with some suggested source reference material where appropriate.

D&D 5E Did the Next playtest focus on DM skills at all?

No, I was disappointed by the choice, and it took me some time to separate the ick of the module from my experience of 5E, and my point (which I nearly lost here) was that the DM was quite good despite it.
