    D&D 5E Polymorph is a bad de-buff spell

This is the worst kind of obvious, blatant, in-your-face metagaming. We know it, you know it, and you have even proudly proclaimed it repeatedly. Then you try to get a pass from everyone by using the oldest, cheesiest excuse in the book: "Sure, I'm metagaming.....but my character isn't."...

    Witch Bolt vs invisible question

Right, now they throw in a spell that is an exception to the (maybe) rule. And there doesn't seem to be a special reason it has in it's text "that you can see" in the wall of light's beam of radiance attack. It is weird that it doesn't specify if one or both sides of the wall is blinding and...

    Witch Bolt vs invisible question

That is very interesting; and more consistent than I thought the spells were. Spells requiring attack rolls are governed by the same rules like melee attacks/ranged attacks. Spells that use the saving throw mechanic are essentially auto-hit but/therefore require line of sight. (Except AoE I...

    Witch Bolt vs invisible question

Spells requiring line of sight wouldn't work. For Witch Bolt, you would follow the regular invisiblity/stealth rules. This was from a post by Dausuul in another thread, I think it sounds about right: The 5E stealth rules are a hot mess. Here's how I read them in this instance: 1. When the...

    Creating spell scrolls

Thanks. How did you come to these numbers? Did you count the healing potions in one of the published adventures?

    Creating spell scrolls

That’s funny, that’s exactly what I find. I have given them potions and scrolls, but the only thing they ever remember are healing potions. Which they need because they charge headlong into everything. At least the wizard likes to scribe new spells into his spellbook, but this still leads him...

    Creating spell scrolls

This is more something I want for them. Especially the wizard, who at this level does not have much spell resources st all. On the same note, I’ve been thinking about items for the rogue to expand his options in combat as well (alchemist fire, acid flasks, smoke and grease bombs, and crafted...

    Creating spell scrolls

Thank you for all the suggestions, all good for thought. I do like the idea of down time/ limited crafting time. Instead of a heavy handed block of "I'm making 20 scrolls!", its more narrative related and a reward of sorts.

    Creating spell scrolls

Thanks for the reply. I guess I’m more worried about imbalancing the game. Though with healing potions being listed as 50 GP (along with first level spell scrolls) and wands of magic missles being uncommon magic items, I suppose for all the “magic items are optional”, it’s not a scarce...

    Creating spell scrolls

I've been mulling over introducing spell scroll creation to my players. They are only 4th level, so the added resources would let the wizard be more active in encounters and the paladin broaden his actions besides smiting and healing (with spell slots). What's holding me back is I don't want...

    D&D 5E Silence and wands

I think the wand of enemy detection is the only wand in the DMG that specifies a command word is spoken as part of the wands activation. Other than that one, there is no verbal component/requirement for wands? Silence will not effect wand use?

D&D 5E quick question on giant octopus

I don’t see a problem with the octopus moving away...that’s trying to model “real life” with the game system a little too much. But I don’t expect to do that anyway; that would really be piling on one PC too much. Plus with the octopus’ 15’ reach, the rest of the party can only use range or...

D&D 5E quick question on giant octopus

Yeah, I was a bit deflated initially thinking the octopus couldn’t attack again and most PCs per PHB can hold their breaths for a few minutes! But being able to beat on the poor restrained PC makes it all good. A side question: the PHB says there aren’t many CON ability checks, but holding...

D&D 5E quick question on giant octopus

I was thinking of using a giant octopus for an encounter. It's attack reads: Tentacles: Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it is Grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the target is Restrained...

D&D 5E Mental prison; power creep, typo or working as intended

Well, I can agree with you that teleporting and general movement are different. I understand what you're saying. But using that with Mental Prison hinges on focusing on the word "move" in the spell text vs. what I would say is the content of the text, that leaving the illusionary prison...

D&D 5E Mental prison; power creep, typo or working as intended

I see where you’re coming from. I don’t really agree though. Teleport is specifically called out as exempt from opportunity attacks. It doesn’t offer the mechanical or fluff reasoning. I think people are taking that specific instance and extrapolating back to say teleporting is not movement...

D&D 5E Mental prison; power creep, typo or working as intended

Not simply superior to disintegrate for straight damage, is that what you mean? Why would teleportation (misty step, teleport, plane shift, blink, etc) escape this spell? The text says: If the target is moved out of the illusion, makes a melee attack through it, or reaches any part of its...

D&D 5E Mental prison; power creep, typo or working as intended

Okay, lets take it down a notch. I never said anyone's game is going to be irreparably broken with one spell. But: Disintegrate to me is a bit like Fireball/Lightning Bolt in that they are iconic spells, and intentionally do more damage than typical spells of it's level. So looking at it...
