4e Frag Fest - MapTools Online Game

Thanks for your interest, but this thread is over 6 years old. I am a 12th level necromancer.

    Lightweight RPG Systems

As the title suggests, I'm looking for some personal (anecdotal) info on very-lightweight RPG systems. In our downtime of cycling 4e games, I like to run old-school fashion off-the-cuff games, generally in a modern setting. The idea is that the player, without any sort of previous knowledge of...

    Can you miss on purpose?

There's a lot of snide, terrible, overly-opinion driven responses here in this thread. So you hate pacifist healers? That's not the question in mind here. They are asking if you can miss on purpose. As for the Pacifist Healer's choice of Spiritual Weapon as their Daily, I don't see much...

DMs sure can make life hard... :(

I'd stay away from that DM if things continue on that way. The most frustrating things in 4e are 1) Always missing and 2) Always being hit. He's doing both at once with that encounter and clearly has no concept of encounter balance. Any situation where monsters autohit characters ruins the...

    Race Elimination Round 5

Tanis is such a nice guy. Real, real nice.

    Race Elimination Round 5

The bottom half is elven. Don't ask me how I know.

    Race Elimination Round 5

I ran an all-kobold campaign and it was fantastic. The 'Shifty' racial power makes them awesome for nearly every class (easily the most USEFUL racial skill, though it isn't the coolest or most flashy) But I can see why they're on the chopping block - it's very hard to RP a lizard/rat/dog PC...

    Howto build a super-healer?

I did a pacifist healer build (human) for a one-off game a few months ago and I plan on rebuilding the character again. IMO, the size of the party dictates how far down the spectrum of PURE HEALER you should go. Thanks to Divine Power, there's now some actual legitimate builds like this now...

Best expansion for Settlers of Catan?

Oh definitely. While I like C&K better, Seafarers doesn't change the game much in difficulty or overall gametime.

Best expansion for Settlers of Catan?

If you get them in some sort of order, definitely start with Cities and Knights. In my opinion, it adds the most interplay. Aadd in the 5-6 player extension for it and the base game and it really takes off. Seafarers is more of a mini-expansion and doesn't make any serious game-changing...

Melee characters and Primary Attack Stats

Clerics and Paladins suffer from the "2-choice Design" like most other classes. The difference between a "Laser Cleric" (all WIS-based ranged attacks) and the STR-based cleric is evident. The Paladin has 2 builds as well: The "Charismadin" and and a STR-based. Trying to mix the 2 builds...

    Critical Hits and Fumbles

I've always hated critical fumble rules in RPG games. The idea that a character could potentially commit suicide/kill a friend because the dice rolled bad is not worth the possibility of getting a big crit damage bonus. I've played in more than a few games where critical fumble rules (even...

Tell me about the Beastmaster Ranger in play...

As Mal said, your math is wrong. It looks like your best bet is going to be using your attacks over the wolf's, and using the wolf to attack is going to be useful only in instances when you can't get to it yourself, and it's primary role will be for setting up flanks.

    Most overpowered / underpowered ?

This is a great thread. For instance, in my experience with 4e (20ish games in 4-5 campaigns) the rogues have always been bypassed by other strikers and other classes in damage (though they have their place from an RP standpoint) and just couldn't keep up in terms of survivability/utility like...

Tell me about the Beastmaster Ranger in play...

This is one reason I've based my build around a 2-handed weapon and feats/items that increase basic attack damage (and OA boostings of other persuasion) An OA from a dual-wielding ranger would be considerably lower than my current OA of 2d6+8 (brutal 1) I'm still interested to see how this...

Tell me about the Beastmaster Ranger in play...

A good point, but in the inevitability that the beast is attacked, this allows the ranger a significantly higher use of OAs. There's a risk/reward payoff here in that, while the beast soaks up more damage, you can dish out a ton in retort. Pair on the the ability of the ranger to heal the...

Tell me about the Beastmaster Ranger in play...

I've just built a dwarven beastmaster ranger for an upcoming game, and I'm also really interested to see how it plays. I've taken the "wolf" template and opted for an Old English Mastiff as the actual pet (more socially acceptable than toting around a spider or a bear, yet still awesome - this...

Basic question about cloud of daggers

Generally, no. Pretty much any power that has a static damage component doesn't take advantage of such bonuses. If you take the wording literally: Enhancement: Attack rolls and damage rolls You'll see that it specifically says damage ROLLS. For further clarification, read over page 57 of...

    Explain Spiritual Weapon to me

I wouldn't imagine that the weapon follows the target. It specifically says, "You can move the weapon up to 10 squares... as a move action" So think about it as it is: a floating weapon that you control fully. Errata also changed the text a bit to this: "You can move the weapon up to 10...

    Do Mounts change combat?

They do "work" indoors, but they receive a -2 to attacks and all defenses insides (except for mounts that are normal inside like Blade Spiders), and while this is a viable option, I highly doubt everyone wants to do every encounter in a cramped dungeon. As for healing mounts, while this is a...
