D&D 5E (2024) Unconfirmed Dark Sun World Book

With how tepid and lukewarm the reaction to 5E Spelljammer was, I'm curious how it would go for Dark Sun. That setting gets top marks from me just for how far from the D&D mainstream it is/was - even if it's not exactly my cup of tea.

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Weird question. Assuming it's in good faith: just because GMing and playing them isn't of interest doesn't mean I don't appreciate what they are trying to do - not to mention keeping up with the TTRPG hobby space, more broadly. It's absolutely something extra to track, even if you're playing a...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

I gotta be honest, over here in the land of my increasingly myopic rules-light preferences, the difference between these two points of view is pretty negligible and academic. Both are additives to increase the tactical decision making in a combat - and extra things to track. It makes little...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

A lazy, lo-fi approach I've taken in the past is to use the same print out, but hide stuff under sticky notes. As a room is revealed, remove the sticky note. Requires trust that players won't peak, but I trust my home players.

OSR A new Revised & Expanded edition of Labyrinth Lord is out

Soooo many OSR style games out there, but people keep buying and playing them. As one of the early movers, I'm curious how that core player base of Labyrinth Lord has evolved to the point of this release.

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Same. I appreciate how polished PF2E is, but I'm just not looking for the kind of game where I have to have several reference sheets of moves and conditions to track.

🎃 Hexingtide, a Game of Minimalist Monstrous Roleplaying, is Looking for Playtesters

Hey man good to see you here as well! Love the work your doing on the Old World adaptation! I'll be running an online playtest or two in the coming weeks and months if you'd like to see how the rules have evolved. Will post about it when the times comes.

🎃 Hexingtide, a Game of Minimalist Monstrous Roleplaying, is Looking for Playtesters

Hey EN community, I used to use the forum here a good bit back in the 4E days, but have drifted to other places for RPG discourse over the years. Have recently been checking out forums again and have been pleased at how the vibe and tone around here has remained pretty sane! 🙏 While I know EN...

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

Well, yeah, it's a pretty D&D-centric place, but even within that, you've got lots of edition options - scores more so if you dip into modern d20 derivatives and/or the OSR space. I came into the hobby via AD&D 2E, and so that nostalgia is always there for me. Not sure if I'd want to go back...

Basic Fantasy 4th Ed Sales across various platforms

To an earlier point on economies of scale combined with the high percentage of folks who pay for Amazon Prime and thereby get the free shipping that comes with it. Hard to ignore that, even if most folks aren't keen about lining Bezos' pockets in the abstract.

So was it a poison pill?

It's going to take more than just canceling for a month, that's for certain. Hasbro is certainly wagering that people will forget about all this and they can just move on with their original plan. (This maybe gloating in some ways, but I'm glad I'm not tied up in 5E gaming these days )

I just released the next public playtest of Hexingtide, my RPG of Minimalist Monstrous Roleplaying!

Totally fair and I appreciate the kind words. To be honest, y'all don't want to trust me with the detail work and tedium of order fulfillment. So I'll be reaching out to indie publishers to see if there's any interest in the hardcopy side of things.

I just released the next public playtest of Hexingtide, my RPG of Minimalist Monstrous Roleplaying!

Well, being an anti-social, anti-marketing, anti-community-engagement is a hard way to build a community for an indie game, even if you're not trying to make any money from it! Hahaha

So was it a poison pill?

I think those are two different objectives (and both of them pretty fair and accurate). 1. There's a mountain of some good, some bad, lots of meh content out there for 5E, and lots and lots of designers riding the coat tails of 5E's popularity to make a couple bucks. I cannot begrudge WotC for...

Open Spots for Two Hexingtide Games in January (Think Hellboy & World of Darkness)

I am currently designing and playtesting HEXINGTIDE , a zine-sized TTRPG of Minimalist Monstrous Roleplaying. The game is my rules-lite love letter to the monsters of folklore, comics, and classic pop culture. Inspired by Hellboy & the wider Mignolaverse, Dan Brereton’s Nocturnals, Eric...
