Looking for diverse group of new to D&D players for stream/podcast - 5e D&D

Hi There! My name is DMSamuel and I am a long time DM and RPG blogger - you may have seen my little website (RPGMusings.com) or heard my voice on the Tome Show Podcast. I'm trying to build a new-to-D&D group for online play that is going to be streamed. The idea is that new players learn to...

Good point. GF9 has a more business style relationship with WotC, it seems. e.g. Goodman Games (and Expeditious Retreat Press) just produced supplements and adventures and used the GSL without much oversight from WotC. GF9, in contrast seems to have a much beefier contract, what with the DM...

D&D 5E Final playtest packet due in mid September.

Yes, but Gale Force 9 was one of the few (the only?) 3rd party producers for 4e, so that may not really count as a good example of a 'new' open-ness in 5e. I do agree that it will probably be more of a business licensing contract and less like an Open License that allows any old schmo to...

Do they actually want robust 3rd party support? They sure as heck didn't for 4e, will 5e be any different?

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree then. As I said, FOR ME it isn't a big deal as I have been running and converting adventures from one edition to the next for ages, but I am not so sure that 4e encounters DMs will feel that it is that easy. Just my first impressions is all. In any...

D&D 5E Final playtest packet due in mid September.

That isn't my point. My point is about expectations. 4e players expect the game to run a certain way and will expect support for that. When I make a homebrew adventure I expect it to be a lot of work, and I would expect it to be work basically any edition, so that isn't really on point. My...

D&D 5E Final playtest packet due in mid September.

It's more than just the skills that make me not like the August playtest packet. Yes, I think it is a travesty because, as I said, the June playtest packet was about as close to great as I think the game can get as far as matching what I want out of a new edition of the game. And as I also...

Yes, sorry - to be fair to you, I did go off on a tangent about MiBG  It irked me a bit because I was very excited for it - to see a product that was usable by all three editions (3.5, 4, next), and I was hoping it would give some insight into the rules modules that are to be optional for...

D&D 5E Final playtest packet due in mid September.

Read my second sentence. I also said you CAN run any adventure in ANY edition, and that includes 4e. BUT I pointed out that 4e has an expected play style and that play style includes minis and maps. To the general 4e player, that is what they will expect from a 4e game because that is the...

D&D 5E Final playtest packet due in mid September.

Maybe, but if you look at, say, Murder in Baldur's Gate, it states that it can be run with 3.5, 4e, or next. I will tell you unequivocally that ANY adventure CAN be run in any edition, and I have played them all... but this adventure, while it says that it can be played in 4e, doesn't come with...

I am the editor of the Tome Show - there is no announced timeline on that show. Unless Morrus has some insider information, I think it's just a mis-speak.

    Character Sheet Contest Finalists

I guess for me the biggest problem is simply that the sheets are boring. They aren't inspiring to me on any level. At the same time, they don't present the things I care about the most (the things I will access the most) in an easy-to-utilize way. I know this contest was "just for fun" but I...

    Character Sheet Contest Finalists

I don't find those very inspiring either. As said above, there are elements of real inspiration in Brian Morgens' sheet, but otherwise I feel like most of those are just very boring. I could make it look as good with a sheet of paper on my own.

    Tip for wandering monsters checks

For me it depends on what they are doing between checks. I usually use 1/6 about every 4 turns, but if they are messing around or doing something noisy - no check needed, they probably attract attention anyway.

Who Buys the Books at Your Table

A the constant GM and avid RPG collector, I buy all the books for any system I like and/or am running. Almost all of the players buy at least a PHB, but only a few of them buy more than that.
