“…Are they gone?” Countering a Delay Tactic from WotC

Err... these aren't the days of 80s shows being little more than toy commercials. Or perhaps it's better to say that these days are the logical extension of that era to its fullest, "monetizing" extent.

MCU films aren't mere advertisements for merchandise. Say rather that the two coexist symbiotically as a holistic monetization enterprise, meant to use all our warm and fuzzy emotions to part us from our money. A film with the production and marketing costs of the average MCU summer blockbuster is too expensive to be a "loss leader" for hats and handkerchiefs.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying MCU films and buying merchandise, of course! But that does not diminish that they are intended to work synergistically to enrich the Marvel brand.

RENTON, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 12, 2022-- A new edition of Dungeons & Dragons comes alive as Wizards of the Coast, a division of Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ:HAS), reveals upcoming plans for an updated and thoroughly modern license to benefit customers, fans, and a vibrant third party community.

Hasbro executive, and longtime roleplayer, Eric Nyman, is pleased to announce that along with the eagerly awaited new edition of Dungeons & Dragons, called One D&D, which will be fully compatible with the award-winning and best-selling Fifth Edition, Hasbro will be unveiling an eagerly-awaited new licensing agreement.

"I realize that there has been a lot of uncertainty in the community regarding how Hasbro could ensure that Dungeons & Dragons would remain not only the iconic roleplaying game, but remain free of racist, exist, homophobis, trans-phobic, bigoted and discriminatory content," said Nyman. "Since announcing that there would be an updated license to better service the fan community and our partners last year, we've been hard at work getting the details set so that Dungeons & Dragons will continue to be responsible for the amazing content you've come to know and love. We are striving to make sure that the balance of providing continued great content under the Dungeons & Dragons brand, while also allowing our community to continue producing the fan content that they are famous for, to continue."

Nyman added, "There have been reports of a prior licensing agreement - let me assure you, do not pay attention to the rumors. Attention will be paid, and the community will not be let down. This past week has brought its share of challenges, and resulted in serious soul-searching. Please know that our great gaming community deserves better than to be enraged by ugly innuendo."

Hasbro expects to continue working closely with its trusted partners, and to announce further details of its exciting new Dungeons & Dragons edition, as well as licensing possibilities, shortly.

A delay tactic worked once, that delay was GSL>5e & OGL1.1a>OGL1.1... At this point wotc is unlikely to convince many of the big players already jumping away from the snake's second bite to unroll their plans in motion. You only need to look at how long MCDM has been talking about developing a new system or the fact that Kobold Press's project black flag twitter was created a year ago but just tweeted for the first time the other day.

Just on this:

That's not how movies work. You don't think the MCU is a commercial for Marvel Comics, do you?
"By some estimates, MCU merchandise has earned Disney around $41 billion by 2020, more than every single Marvel movie combined."

So not comics, but for merch? Yes.

The latest rumor suggests that WotC will still try to push the OGL 1.1 through after a delay, hoping the whole thing blows over and that they can make up the difference from new subscribers to DDB and the new commercia… I mean, “movie.” How can we, civilly but forcefully, help demonstrate that such a tactic won’t work?

Ideally, how can we do so NOW rather than later?
I mean, cancel your DDB subs for starters. Unless your game is like, tomorrow and your sub ends tomorrow, you've got essentially nothing to lose.

Don't buy any WotC books or merch.

Those are probably going to be the main things?
