You telling me you think The Transformers wasn't a massive TV commercial for a toy line? Because it was.

I am pretty sure they expected more profit from the movies than the toy line. Merchandising is great, when you can get it, but unless you are Star Wars, merch probably doesn't surpass the media itself.
