0 BAB at level 7?

Umm what? Because, that's not what my books say.

Did you get the special Swahili Edition?

No, seriously -- what DO your books say, that leads you to think you can suffer that penalty multiple times ... ?!?

And how do you arrive at the conclusion that any multiclassing produces any penalty, whatsoever ... ?!?

Crud, you're right about needing to be more than one level apart; I was just trying to be snarky, and I mixed up the rule. :(

However, Storm Raven's correct on the other part--it is a cumulative penalty. From the PHB, p. 60:

"Your multiclass character takes a -20% penalty to XP for each class that is not within one level of his or her highest class." (Emphasis mine).

10th level

Hi!

With 3.0 rules, I get up to 10th level with BAB +0:

Brd1/Clr1/Drd1/Mnk1/Rog1/Sor1/Wiz1/Divine Oracle1/Tamer of Beasts1/Watch Detective1

BAB: +0
Base Saves: 8/10/16

The Char needs an Int of at least 14 to get the necessary skill points (4+2+2+4+8+2+2+2+4 from levels +18 from Int = 48; enough to meet the prereqs for WD even if you have to spend some sp cross-class).

The Char also needs to change AL - so what?
If thats not allowed take out the Bard: We get to Level 9; Ref and Will would go down by 2.

Divine Oracle from Defenders of the Faith uses up 10 sp and skill Focus (scry).

Tamer of Beasts and Watch Detective are from Masters of the Wild. ToB requires 16 sp buying partly cross-class and Skill Focus (Animal Empathy). WD needs 20 sp (partly cross-class again) and the Track Feat.

A 10th level Charakter with a BAB of +0, casting 1st level spells...

BAB: +0
Fort: +10
Ref: +4
Will: +26

15 levels, no alignement incompatibility. You may add Commoner and Bard, for a result of 17 levels.

BAB: +0
Fort: +10
Ref: +6
Will: +28

Multiclassing as a general rule sucks
Ther are exceptions but in general:
Multiclassing spall caster is a BAD idea, one less level means gaining your top end spells a level after the BBEG gets his.

Multiclassing fighters iis ok if you multiclass in paladin/ranger/barbarian because you maintain your BAB progression. Barbarian X/ranger 1 is a ncie way to get a two weapon fighting barbarian, for example. Its arguable if this is as good a a straight fighter however.

Rouges multiclass well with ONE other guild, such or sorcerer or ranger to give them a little more oompfh in combat (rogue who can cast truestrike on himslef anyone ? Or manipulate a wand of invisibility without having to roll a 15).

Of course right now Im playing a druid3/necromacer3 Theurge 1, but when the party was formed I was the spare character .. so I had a bit of room to play about :)

Multiclassing gives better save progression than single classing, but I cant think of any instance this is game breaking. especially as the Paladin save boost got move up in levels
On the whole unles multiclassing is VERY carefulyl though through is tends to dilute a character, so the gain in save progression is relatively irrelevant.

I have not seen this suckiage of which you speak.

I agree you have to be careful about multiclassing when it comes to spellcasting classes. But almost any mixture of fighter/barbarian/ranger/rogue is as viable as a single-classed character with a little planning.

Most non-spellcasters do very well by taking a single level of cleric. Some do well with a single level of wiz/sor with some forethought.
