12 part Adventure Path good for new DM/players?

And to tell the truth... there's a fairly good chance that Savage Tide is going to end up being even longer than Age of Worms. There's certainly enough material in this 12-part adventure to take characters from 1st level up to 20th (or even 21st). Not all of these adventures will be set on the Isle of Dread (in fact, only 3 of the 12 are set totally on the Isle), but you will indeed have plenty of opportunities to use your fiendish tyrannosaur mini before the campaign is over.

I, for one, am really looking forward to this one. I'm currently playing through both Shackled City and Age of Worms, but this one I'd like to DM! Sounds really cool!

While I only barely scratched the surface in Shackeled City, I think that campaigns in a box are not a bad way to go. Certainly from a DM's perspective, it's awhole lot less work.

And, heck from a player's perspective, it would be groovy to know that your campaign isn't going to poop out after ten or eleven levels.

Unless your group hates any sort of module because they "railroad" you. :( But that's a problem with the group.

I think the adventure paths are great, whether for newbies or experienced DM/players. I haven't played or ran any of them for the reason I mentioned above :(, but I bought the Shackled City hardcover and was totally impressed.

I'd say go for it.

Pros:
- You have an entire campaign ready to go, as well as advice on how to handle chargen, tactics, and getting PCs involved. You can't go wrong with advice from James, Erik, & Co.
- It's prepackaged. Every group will need to customize it to a degree, but never underestimate the power of drag 'n drop adventures.
- The advice articles alone will improve your DMing skills.

Cons:
- The APs can be lethal. You'll have to learn a great deal on your feet.
- They tend towards Core Rules, but you may find yourself expanding your gaming library to run it properly. (Not /that/ bad of a con, IMHO)

Go for it!

We have just finished chapter 1 of Shackled City and my opinion is that it would be "trial by fire" for new players and a DM. An experienced DM with new players would be easier. An experienced DM with a mix of experienced players and new ones would even be better (that is our situation). I can only assume from what I have read that Savage Tides will continue to hold the bar at this level or rise it even higher.

But all that said, I would run it if you want to, even with new players. Its sure to be fun, and it sounds like its what you would like to run. Just maybe be up front with the fact it is a lethal and challenging series.
