I remember before last Winter Fantasy they said these things, some big anouncement was to be made...they announced jack.

True, but the thing is...Winter Fantasy is all theirs now. They's specifically stated that all major D&D announcements will take place THERE and not at other cons.

And they ARE making major announcements at Gencon, at least on the DI, they have said that already.

How do we know its major? I mean, to me, major is "4e!" or "D&D is dead!" or "Diaglo was right! We shall return to the one true game!!", not talking about the DI...which they've already announced.

I mean, when the DI was announced and these boards went absolutely INSANE, that was a major announcement. Elaborating on it, though? Nah.

Ummm ... WotC said they've got a big announcement at GenCon this year in Dungeon 149 (atleast I believe that was the number, I'll double check when I get home).

They refer to it as a "Media Preview Dinner", and the invitations (well, mine does - I assume the others do) merely say "Wizards of the Coast will be hosting a special, intimate dinner for several members of the gaming and sub-pop culture media the evening before Gen Con XL. We hope you will be able to join us as Wizards’ senior marketing and R&D staff answer, in detail, your questions regarding the future of one of the company’s flagship games."

I then have a one-on-one with WotC on Sunday morning.

From an impact point of view, Winter Fantasy is mostly people that know and love D&D, so you'll be announcing something major to the converted, so to speak. Announcing at Gencon however, will give you a buzz amongst not only the people who already know and love D&D, but everyone else with a faint interest as well. You'll make a wider impact, possibly convert some new people. I think it makes much more sense to announce major D&D things at Gencon.

What he said. I'm a big fan of D&D and I'd never heard of Winter Fantasy whateveritscalled until recently. If I go to one major convention per year it's GenCon not Winter Fantasy. But who knows stranger thinkgs have happened. StarCraft II was anounced in Korea for example.

There is a lot of restructuring occurring now which effects the products and their content. They will want to increase interest on their new stuff (Internet site) while maintaining interest on old (miniatures) and since it has become such a big topic- deal with 4e.
