I think they'll just announce more products for the later portion of 2008. No 4E. More print products (not DI-exclusive).

The way-out-of-left-field announcement might be the release of AD&D Classic.

Selling the company, doing some kind of old school game, holographic pogs, these are exciting. And I guess the old school game is an actual possibility.

But, I am going to go out on that limb. A little.

If you are taking back Dungeon and Dragon, doing this whole online networking thing, and almost completely eliminating (non adventure) crunch from your releases for the coming year. Wouldn't that be the time to announce a new edition?

And so I say they will. Yes, the could delay to the eXWinter Fantasy. They could focus on the DI. They could rely on gleemax to grow the demand for books already printed....but why not do that 4th ed? In any case, we'll know something soon.

If not D&D, then Magic (which will also get a major announcement, but why would Morrus be invited there?). Modern probably doesn't even qualify as a boat (sadly).

Well... boat. Based on Comics & Games Retailer Magazine from last two years D&D line create about 60%of all sold books, D20 Modern about 3-4%. But D20 modern has less books in the line and no new realease. So it might be surprisingly strong seller. Although who knows. I still hope for D20 modern revival.

Sounds like more than I'd have expected, so boat status it is. And I agree that I'd like to see more Modern (d20 Modern 2E mayhaps?), but I doubt that this would be the announcement that's being talked about.

In a recent Gleemax podcast they spoke to Chris Perkins, WotC story manager. He's in charge of D&D and D20 Modern among other things. He didn't really speak about the future of either game, in fact the interview was completely devoid of any substance, he talks a lot but says nothing. He did state that game lines like D20 Modern have had their staff reasigned to other games. IIRC the writers moved on to the latest edition of Star Wars. It sounds like WotC has a very limited number of products to put out each year and they don't hire new staff very often, instead move the existing staff from project to project as needed. They also move staff to other non-rpg games like minis and card games. What ever is most profitable. I get the feeling that RPG's are relatively small source of revenue when compared to minis and card games so they tend to be the first to suffer if another more profitable project comes along. A good example is the Star Wars RPG vs. the Star Wars minis. Guess where the money is?

One other thing to note from the interview, he said that the anouncement at GenCon would only bring up more questions. Great. Prepare to be frustrated.
