This may have been posted, but I haven't seen it. I'm going to GenCon for the first time and would like whatever tips those of who have been can give me and others. Thanks in advance for your time.

1. Do NOT overschedule yourself with games and events -- I cannot stress this point enough. My friends and I made this error our first year and spent the entire drive back to Detroit bemoaning all the things we missed because we felt obligated to play in the games we'd scheduled. There is a ton to see and do, and you should leave yourself plenty of time to soak in the experience along with the flexibility to alter your day if you stumble upon something cool.
2. In conjunction with #1, buy some Generic tickets. You will find plenty of games, seminars, etc., to squeeze into as a walk up even if the event is listed as full.
3. Wear comfortable shoes; carry a nice, roomy bag or backpack; keep plenty of bottled water on hand...and a few snacks too.

And other than having fun, the rest is just commentary :)

At the World Science Fiction Convention, they recomend each day you get at least...

5 hour of sleep, 2 meals, & 1 shower

(Some people claim you can get away with 1 meal & 2 hours of sleep, if you take 5 showers :D)

Bring a water bottle.
Don't over-schedule--you'll find plenty to do when you're not attending games.
Particularly don't fill up your schedule in the 10am-6pm hours, because that's the only time the dealer's room and art show are open.
Don't play games you're familiar with. Or, more precisely, don't play the games you play at home. Use a convention as an opportunity to try out new games, or to play your favorite games that you can never get anybody else to play.
Wear comfortable shoes with good support. You'll be on your feet most of the day, and you'll be on concrete without any real padding (other than your shoes) most of that time.
If you must use one of those damn wheelie backpacks/suitcases, learn to pay attention to where it is, and steer it, and be considerate in your use of space. [sorry, rant mode now disengaged]
Browse the dealer room first. One, so that you don't spend all your money before you discover The One Cool Thing You Must Have. Two, so you can make all your purchases in close temporal proximity, and at a time when you can cart them back to your hotel room (or car, or whatever) soon thereafter and won't have to carry 50# of books around all day.

Don't over book yourself, give yourself time to see Gencon. Like:
Art Show
Auction
Guest
ENnies
Street Dance
GenCon Forum Stink
Don't take money the first time through the Dealer Room, just window shop and look.
Wear good walking shoes.
Don't take every book you have, you just lug them around.

Let me wholeheartedly disagree on one point. Overbook. Go nuts. The games are the ultimate point, here. You will find time for everything. I do, at least.

Pack light.

Know where restaurants are - buying food in the con is -expensive-!

And be sure to buy some Generic tickets - they'll get you into 90% of all events.

Oh, and PLEASE! If you stop to gawk at something (or someone) in the dealer's area, get the #$@* out of the middle of the aisle! Thank you. ;)

This is the same point that my fellow GenCon traveller CarlZog made. His opinion was it's better to book stuff and not play something that to not book enough and wish you had. You can always swap your tickets when you get there (or give them away).
