+2 Sword

If i am using a +2 Sword and I hit with the hilt is it still considered +2 or does the enchantment somehow differentiate between the hilt and blade?

At one time I think the FAQ answered that if you used the weapon to make an improvised attack, that you didn't get to use the bonus.

It's really up to the DM. Personally, I would note in the weapons description which was the case. A basket hilted broadsword wield as a gauntlet should in my opinion not count as an improvised attack.

If I'm the DM you only get the +2 when using the business end of the weapon - in this case the stabby slashy bit.

Definitely the DM's call IMO.

If I cared about simulating reality I wouldn't play d&d :-)

D&D is about fantasy fiction more than anything else and I maintain that yes, the blade there is the business end.

Even though historically people could bash someone with whatever bit was most convenient, I'd wager that most deaths actually occurred as a result of the pointy cutty bit. Otherwise why go to the bother of producing it?

It's like how so many aftermarket car modifications actually decrease performance*...because the first weapon masters were wrong? :D. All you really need is a poin-ted stick. Or a banana.

* like putting a rear spoiler on a front-wheel drive car.
