20 Attacks a round =)

Yes it is possible!

Fighter, fairly high level.
Has feat chain to get Whirlwind attack.
Has feat chain to get Two-Weapon Fighting.
Armed with a 'small' longspear (d6 damage, -4 to hit (-2 for being odd size, -2 for TWF) and 10ft reach) and 'medium' shortsword (d6 damage, -2 to hit for TWF, 5ft reach).

Performs Whirlwind attack, attacking every opponent within reach, that is 20 squares if surrounded. Nasty!

PS: Correct me if I am wrong

PPS: If anyone can tell me how combat expertise stacks with fighting defensively I would appreciate it.

Yeah, it's 24 squares - 3.5 explicitly allows 10 foot reach to hit an opponent two diagonals away.

Of course, if he's hovering, he threatens 124 5' cubes. Fill them with Will-o-wisps, for example.

Give him an Amulet of Growth or Ring of Spell Storing containing Righteous Might, and his reach doubles to 20 ft. I can't be bothered with the maths, but that gives him somewhere between 342 and 728 threatened cubes while hovering, depending on how diagonals are counted beyond two squares for reach weapons.

And then, of course, if opponents are very small, you can fit more than one in each cube...

Sniff :(

Ordinarilly I would say that Whirlwind only affects those within 5' (according to the write-up of the feat) but since I'm 3.5 impared, I just don' t know anything anymore.

A) In 3.5 Whirlwind attack precludes any extra attacks from feats like TWF or cleave. You can only use one weapon to attack with. (Simple fix: Use a spiked chain instead of two weapons)

B) In 3.5 you can hit the corners, so it's 24 square (or more, as pointed out by Hypersmurf)

No cleave with whirlwind? GRRRR!!!
Sure it was a little clunky mechanicaly, but spells can have complimentry effects why not feat chains? You can cleave when spring attacking, should be the same with whirlwind, that should be the reason for all the prerequisites for whirlwind.

I see a houserule comming on.

Make sure you drop the closer in ones first with your spiked chain, so the ones further out don't have cover. ;)

SO let me get this right: Did they DROP the part about how whirlwind attack affects everything within 5 feet? Does it now say "within reach" instead?

This is a serious power-up for that feat, because you had to take an Epic feat to get anything further than 5 feet.

I like it. WWA used to be one of the more useless feats out there, in terms of bang for the buck. Once you get past a certain level, you rarely encounter huge hordes of 1HD mooks (unless you're playing IMC, in which case they just keep coming), and even when you do, a fireball is still more efficient at wiping them out. Even with this change, I doubt that WWA is going to be worth taking for the vast majority of fighter PCs.

Yes thanks for corrections, it only came to me briefly when I was reading through the PHB.

And combining it with the hovering thing is mean! Plus making it larger... ouch. I think a Hill Giant fighter is going to be scary, very scary...
