The Calgary Flames made a move to get more offence next season, acquiring forward Alex Tanguay from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenceman Jordan Leopold, a 2006 second round pick, and a conditional second rounder in 2007 or 2008.

Tanguay, 26, had 29 goals and 49 assists for 78 in 71 games last season.

In 450 NHL games, Tanguay has scored 137 goals, 263 assists and 400 points. He is a +121 in his six seasons with Colorado.

Leopold, 25, played in 74 games for the Flames last season, recording 20 points on two goals and 18 assists. He posted a +6 plus/minus rating and finished second on the team in average time on ice (22:19).

"Jordan is a solid defenseman and a very good skater," said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere. "He is a former Hobey Baker Award winner that has great playmaking abilities at both ends of the ice. He is only 25 years-old and has a bright future ahead of him."

"Moreover, we are hopeful that this year's second-round draft pick will become an Avalanche player in the near future," added Giguere.

Leopold made his NHL debut with the Flames in 2002-03 and has compiled 15 goals and 52 assists in 214 career games.

Leafs get Raycroft from Bruins

(TSN.CA) - Looking for a new starting goaltender with the expected buyout of veteran Ed Belfour on the horizon, the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired former Calder Trophy winner Andrew Raycroft from the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

''He's a proven No. 1 goaltender, former rookie of the year, he's going to look great in our uniform,'' Leafs GM John Ferguson told TSN.

The Leafs sent goaltending prospect Tuukka Rask to the Bruins.

Raycroft won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 2004 after posting a 29-18-9 record for the Bruins. He also had a stellar 2.05 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.

Last season, however, Raycroft struggled and lost his starting job. He finished 8-19-2 with a 3.70 goals against average and an .879 save percentage.

Rask was the Leafs first round pick in 2005. He was 12-8-7 with a 2.09 goals against average and a .926 save percentage for Ilves Tampere in the Finnish Elite League last season.

Rask was named the best goaltender at the 2006 world junior hockey championship, but the Leafs were able to trade him away because they have another blue-chip goaltending prospect in Canadian Justin Pogge.

Hmm...I thought for certain we would take Patrick Berglund.

I have no idea who this Grabner kid is.

The pick was off the map. Most of the scouts had him ranked to go in the 2nd round.

Kings trade Demitra to Wild

(TSN.CA) - The Los Angeles Kings did not have a first round draft pick on Saturday, so they still made a splash in an effort to get one.

The Kings traded forward Pavol Demitra to the Minnesota Wild for Patrick O'Sullivan and the 17th pick in the draft.

Demitra, 31, played scored 25 goals and 37 assists for 62 points in 58 games last season. It was a tough one for Demitra, who had health problems, including a bad eye injury.

The Wild expect him to make a lethal partnership with Marian Gaborik.

"I think it'll help them both be productive," Wild GM Doug Risebrough said shortly after making the deal. "They both are a good fit, they'll feed off each other. We think Marian's the best player on the team and we're trying to find ways to make him better."

In 611 NHL games, Demitra has scored 241 goals, 340 assists and 581 points. He is a +106 in his career.

O'Sullivan is a skilled player who was a second round pick last year. He scored 47 goals and 93 points for Houston of the AHL last season.

The Kings used the 17th selection to take USHL forward Trevor Lewis. He was the league MVP after scoring 75 points in 56 games.

Idiot trade by Los Angeles. Demitra was one of their few blue chippers and they traded him for what? Sullivan and a Pick?

Demitra and Gaborik are going to be hell on wheels for Minnesota. This can only be either a salary dump or a trade request from Demitra.

Wonderful :(

So the Flames just got even more lethal.

I for one welcome our new Calgarian overlords.

That is a nice pickup for the Leafs (particularly given that Pogge is--or can be--their backup. That kid is blue chip)

The first round took just over 3 hours to complete. The second round is already done. It's amazing how much faster things go when the whole world isn't watching. :p

The Oilers first pick was #45, which they used to select Jeff Petry, a 6'2" defenseman from Des Moines of the USHL. (It's definitely been quite the draft for US born players.) The Oilers love to draft players out of Michigan, and are patient enough to let them develop.

Yes, this makes me worried that Calgary might actually have some scoring ability next year. Lord know they're hard enough to beat as it is already. Then again, Tony Amonte was suppose to be the "man" in Calgary to take some of the pressure off Iggy. :p
