2008 Judge Selection Begins

In order to be able to announce next year's judges at the ENnies ceremony at Gen Con, I want to hold the elections for the 5 positions shortly.
Just like we did for this year's Nominees will be asked to submit a completed form and have another individual second their nomination.
In addition, each candidate will be asked to answer up to ten questions to help establish their platform. I hope to encourage discussion over multiple boards as well, but thought that the basic 10 questions could help save some time.
So.
If you've been thinking of being a judge, I highly recommend you read Master of the Game's blog about his experience this past year to get an idea of the scope of work. Talk it over with your significant other. Then watch www.ennieawards.com for more details.
If you're interested in the process, think of a question or two you think it is important for each judge to answer. I will pick the best and include them as part of the entry form.

Timeframe:
-Declaration of candidacy will begin July 16th (the day voting begins for the 2007 ENnies products and publishers)
-The final nominees list will be posted July 30th, the day after the last day of voting for the 2007 ENnies products and publishers.
-Voting runs August 6-12th.

Ah look, an excuse to pimp my blog http://enniejudge.blogspot.com. I'll try and put together a post in the next couple days that goes into a bit more detail about the difficulties/rewards of being a judge.

In the mean time, I suppose you could read a little bit about the reading commitments, the 23 hour day I put in to get the final nominees out, or the process I used to do my judging.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone though, it's been a very rewarding experience. I just want everyone to know what they're in for. I know that one judge has said already that he wouldn't be interested in doing it again, and I think all of us can attest to the amount of mental efort it takes up as deadlines approach.

I should also warn you to consider what may be happening to you over the next year or so. A couple of the judges can speak the the difficulties of big moves and job changes while still trying to receive or read products.

Crap. It just occured to me that I need to change my forum title :(

For those playing at home, there are at least 2 mega-products that could be entered in next year's ENnies:

Castle Whiterock (rumored to be around 700 pages)
City of Brass Box Set (around 500 pages)

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

Dextra, I might be interested in throwing my hat in the ring this time around. I'm in Australia though. Will that be a problem/rule me ineligible to be a judge?

One of the biggest problems we faced this year was companies waiting until the last minute to submit their products. The spectre of having to get copy to Australia in time for judging mught actually scare those submitting into mailing their products ahead of time.

Of course, it's Dextra's call but, in my view, everyone would benefit from your entry.

My experience as a judge this year was educational and fun. There were times when it was a little overwhelming, but - for the most part - it was very rewarding. :)

EDIT: And I *totally* want to do it again.

I think I would like to run again. Especially since I have the time to do it since I am self employed and can take as much time off as I need to.

I'll think about it some more.

As well you should!

But it's worth noting that the potential judge fills out a form, submits it, and then has another person second their nomination. A little easier that way.

I'm hoping to be a judge again next year as well. I'm still a little numb from all the reading, but I trust that will pass. :D
