24 - 4e style (closed)

I think the problem with PBP with 4e is that we don't do enough pre-combat planning.

In another game where I have a wizard I have quite good area effect powers that I should use before the heavies pile in. Unfortunately my initiative sucks so by the time I am ready to fireball (or whatever) the goblins/orcs etc they are in close combat with the others. That leaves me at the edges with single target, lowish damage powers to use whilst the bigger spells don't get a look-in.

I have found this in a number of games and have yet to see any 'proper' planning going on.

I feel that we should all get used to organising ourselves at the start of each combat. e,g, "OK we are 'y' distance from those things. Wiz, hit those goblins with something horrible while ranger and rogue, you whittle that boss down with missiles. Everyone else use ranged fire/powers etc until we are ready to charge/runaway/die etc"

As it is we are all acting individually and it is really hurting. We need to combine to get the best effects e.g. flanking, charging, marking etc.

What do you think?

What do you think?

An agreement between player to post their thoughts on strategy in the OOC thread upon seeing the map and positions before starting the fight in earnest could pay off.

Of course, when the situation change dramatically during the fight (i.e. the whirlig blade...) a lot of the planning goes to hell. But the key is still communication.

Absolutely! No plan withstands contact with the enemy but it might give us a bit of breathing space.

And CG, I agree with you also. Why else did Garrick dive through the panel?

Here my suggestion:

1) The people who are down climb back. Yeah, I know, you will lose your action, but there is no way we will be able to stand our ground down there. We will be overwhelm. And they will lose there time too to climb.

We have a machine that shoots darts, Leyra have a bow, and we have other option. Also, there might be a few thing we could use to throw at them. If they have something to fills the trap with acid, maybe they stock it in teh northen room.

And for people without good ranged option, there is still one zombie and two cultist on our floor, we have a lot of time of joy to spend up here.

I'm realist. And I still don't understand why you didn't use your bow to take down the cultist. Metagaming wise, at the number there was, it was easy to see they were minions... anyway, I don't think I'll be able to go down there before some time, as I have three guys on me and now I am alone.

That's another thing that is Bad, the group is splitting, and we are strong in group.

Because the bow attacks are not good.

Much like the meleers, Leyra needs to be close to be effective.

And, seriously, there are only a small number of opponents down there, who are truely dangerous. The minions are not the problem at all, regardless of their numbers (pretty much).

And the real threats have ranged attacks, too, so it doesn't help to stay up, it only betters their chances, because our attacks are much weaker than what we are capable of.

Bye
Thanee
