Kern disarms the halfling and then throws him at the swordmage. Bind him and carrying him. We should look around before heading back. Kern takes a moment to search around for anything the zealots had left behind in the nearby buildings before trying to figure out how to get back.[sblock=OOC]Do you want me to roll perception?

Is the portal gone? We'll have to figure a different way back then.[/sblock]

Kern and Nathan have some trouble joining with the rest of the crew; their crystals are out of reach and there is no relay since Control was wounded. But they are less than a mile out from the campaign HQ and they make the trek back.

Once on the site they see that reinforcement have finally started to arrive on the site. In short order, the communication network is re-established and the team exchange news. Kern and Nathan drag their prisoner to the manor and re-unite with their team.

---

"Yes that looks like Akmenos. Did his father say how he came to be missing? A man with connections like his father is not one to be triffled with. I'd say this is a lot more than triffling. I'm assuming that he had hoped you would not bring back his son in a condition like this?"

-"Well, truthfully, the old man had been waiting for a ransom demand that just wasn't coming. Looks like they weren't interested in money. I still doubt they would kidnap the son of such a powerful man just for... hum... I am not entirely sure what use he was in this little experiment. None of the golem's part seem to be made of tiefling, so to speak. What would you use a tiefling for, if you were a demented weirdo? Anyway, I guess this is was all secondary. First they must have pumped him for information or maybe forced him to do something for them and then, instead of just slicing his throat and leave him in a ditch, they got creative with his carcass."

Kendrick grabbed the jar with Akmenos' head.

-"Well, contract is over. I won't get a bonus for this one but I still owe the father to bring him back something he can bury. It's been a pleasure working with you."

[sblock=OOC]Perception check was a failure, but you can take twenty so essentially sooner or later you find everything you can. It this case, it will be later... I will account for it in the next encounter.[/sblock]

Garrick takes his time but eventually inventorize the following items of interest :

A laboratory journal
A series of letter between (found in a small safe in the master's bedroom)
A set of ritual books
A list of coded names and numbers (Also in the safe)
A financial ledger

These can investigated with various skills (and common sense; if you state upfront you are looking for specific subjects you might get an automatic success).

---

The halfling can obviously be interrogated as a skill challenge. He seems both fanatical and affriad of the consequence of talking.

DC 21, 4 success before 3 failures.

"Before taking the contract, did you find anything about what Akmenos was up to? Could he have had connections to the dissidents here? Or opposed them for some reason? It doesn't make sense that he is connected to the attack on the Consul just coincidentally, not with the power his father holds." ponders Mirage while they gather the papers from the gruesome basement. "We are still no closer to the who or why even though we found more of them. Perhaps we should bring the halfling back for questioning. He can be questioned post mortality if that is required."

What is going on here? Why the radio silence?

It's not that hard; either you participate in the interrogation (Good cop, bad cop etc.) or you just pick on the investigation clue, either with an appropriate skill and item or simply by having a good idea of what to look for and stating it.

Everyone has skills that are relevant.

Leyra

Leyra leaves the arcane documents to those better suited in understanding them, even though she has a limited knowledge about these things.

Instead, she watches the prisoner and assists in interrogating him, trying to discern, whether he is willing to speak the truth.

OOC: Insight 20; other than that, I only really see Perception as a useful skill for Leyra, but we already found all the clues as far as I can see, so we seem to be beyond that.

"OK little guy," tells Nathan to the halfling. "we have two way to deal with that. The soft and the hard way. The soft is pretty simple, you speak and we listen. The second is dirty, painful. But in the end, you'll see, you'll also speak. So, let's strart with an easy question, who employ you?"

[SBLOCK=OOC]Bad start: Intimidate halfling (1d20+13=15)[/SBLOCK]

OOC: Busy weekend for me. Now less so.

After being briefed while Garrick searches, Kern decides to focus on the halfling first. He cringes at Nathan's weak attempt and almost shoves the swordmage out of the way. Placing his dagger at the halfling's temple, he digs it in and just says, Talk.

OOC: I suggest Mirage have a look at the letters, ledger, ritual book, and the rest, maybe with Garrick? Perhaps try to decode names and such first? As for Kern, 32 Intimidate (nat 20!).

"Hey folks, where d'ye think I'll be most useful? I could start pulling the little lad's fingernails out - I'm quite good at that (Intimidate 16). Or d'ye want me to look at all those books. Problem is I ain't much good at that lessen it has anything to do with stuff on the streets (Streetwise 11)."

He shrugged his shoulders. "Just point me in the right direction and I'll get at it."
