In my experience (DMing a group including 1 PC with 1 cohort, who incidentally developed personality conflicts with his PC and left to become a PC, all while being played by the PC's player), the party often got MORE XP when the cohort was with them than they would have without him, since he reduced the average level of the party (a factor I haven't seen reflected in examples here). Granted, our XP system was tweaked somewhat, I'm not sure if that would have happened otherwise.
True, that's now irrelevant in 3.5 if you switch to the now-default "FR" system that doesn't use average party level, but the whole argument is irrelevant in 3.5 since cohorts now work differently.
