3.5 Facings

Charwoman Gene

Adventurer
Hey, can anyone tell me what the new facings are?

I really like having my larger creatures well based, and I just want to know what the face of a large to colossal creature will be.

Are dragons different?

From memory:

Large - 10 ft.
Huge - 15 ft.
Gargantuan - 20 ft.
Colossal - 30 ft., with some larger expections.

I don't know about dragons, but I doubt that they are different.

I haven't heard any changes to how facing is going to be done in 3.5...

Are they just clarifying exactly how much space large creatures take up?

It talks about the new facing rules in Savage Species. Basically they are removing the XX by XX/YY and making it XX/YY.

For example, currently a Medium-size creature has a face/reach of 5 ft. by 5 ft./5 ft.

Under the new rules (as given in Savage Species) it now becomes
5 ft./5 ft.

It makes sense, given that creatures don't have a "facing". Ideally, the space they should take up would be circular.

What happens to an ogre who had 5 5/10?

Is it now 10/10 or 5/5? Or 5/10? I mean, if an ogre has a reach of 10 feet does that go away?

Still cornfused....

Reach will not change (as far as we know).

The only thing that will change are creatures with uneven facings - like a centaur with 5x10 will become 10x10.

Do we know if they're getting rid of the distinction between (tall) and (long)? I may need to get some new ogre counters if ogres are suddenly 10x10...

I believe Large (tall) creatures like ogres are going to be 10/10; I think there's a race in Races of Faerun or Savage Species that's Large, has reach, and is listed as taking up a 10 ft by 10 ft. area. I may be misremembering, however.

I still wish they'd make some exceptions to size rules for odd cases. (E.g. -- unrelated to facing, but it's still a bit odd that the human part of a centaur, which is presumably roughly human sized, can wield Large weapons in one hand with no problem. :))

Well, the cornugon is Large and 10x10, and that's in 3.0...
