D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Good 8th Level Wizard Spells?

Here's the spell list from my own personal spellsheet. It includes WoTC and Malhovac.
Short list. Take a look at Lava Spikes from Dragon 294. Looks like it might work for you, and the save is reflex. I also like Nybor's Wrathful Castigation, I think that one is Magic of Faerun.

Abjuration
Dimensional Lock: Teleportation and interplanar travel blocked for one day/level.
Dune Tomb: You encase creatures in sand and place them in stasis
Mass Manifest: Multiple creatures are forced to manifest on your plane
Mind Blank: Subject is immune to mental/emotional magic and scrying.
Prismatic Wall: Wall’s colors have array of effects.
Protection from Spells: Confers +8 resistance bonus.
Conjuration
Incendiary Cloud: Cloud deals 4d6 fire damage/round.

What level is Spell Mastery in Malhavoc's Eldritch Might. I think its 7th or 8th. That is a must have for blaster mages.

If its 7th just take an extended version.

Otto's Irresistable Dance has been less fun since they changed it to Otto's Resistable Dance in 3.5e..
Huh? From the SRD:
Irresistible Dance

Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]

Level: Brd 6, Sor/Wiz 8
Components: V
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Living creature touched
Duration: 1d4+1 rounds
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes
The subject feels an undeniable urge to dance and begins doing so, complete with foot shuffling and tapping. The spell effect makes it impossible for the subject to do anything other than caper and prance in place. The effect imposes a –4 penalty to Armor Class and a –10 penalty on Reflex saves, and it negates any AC bonus granted by a shield the target holds. The dancing subject provokes attacks of opportunity each round on its turn.

Hmm one of 2 things is the case then

My memory is faulty (likely)

OR

It had a saving throw at some point which was then taken out?

I'm sure I remember people talking about how it had a saving throw added..

After a nearly disastrous encounter, I now essentially consider Mind Blank a must have spell. As a big time character, the last thing you want to go down to is a bunch of low level twerps spamming Confusions, Greater Commands, and other similar spells. Granted, this was 3.0 so they were casting twice. However, low level save vs incapacitation spells can still bring down higher level characters with luck - and if the high level guys are heavy on fighter or rogue types.

Moment of Prescience looks good, but I've never used it.

I prefer Otto's Irresistible Dance to Maze, since you and your friends can kill the target while he's dancing. It's a good spell against dragons and other super beasts.

Meteorite from When the Sky Falls is sweet. I think it's a great high end attack spell, but it requires a feat to use. Probably not an option at this point. This spell was my evoker's big gun, even after I got 9th level spells.

Chains of Antimagic (BOEM 3) is good too.

I hated facing Power Word: Stun, so it must be good. Not sure how it stacks up when a level higher and when facing 3.5's expanded anti-stun options.

Greater Prying Eyes looks like fun too. Still, it can probably wait.

I'd like to present my short list of spells so far. Great suggestions all around!

  • Mind Blank: Indeed, a must-have spell. If not for my wizard, for the fighter types in the party.
  • Maze: I am still put off by the Touch range of Otto's.
  • Moment of Prescience: Essential to avoid those "bad luck" rolls, or to ensure that important ranged touch attack hits home, or to avoid a grapple.
  • Sunburst: Long range, huge area of effect, possible blindness (Reflex save), dispels darkness, automatic 6d6 damage with no resistances, deadly vs undead. Great spell with Archmage Mastery of Shaping.
  • Leech Field: Small AoE, but great combat healing/damaging spell. A lot of mileage, since the healing/damage cap is only attained at 40th level.

The other suggestions were very good, but considering that at the next Archmage level, I will be choosing Mastery of Elements. Switch Firebrand or Ilajam Fire to Sonic, and they'll cut through most resistances, at the cost of 3 points of DC (because of the Elemental Savant Elemental Focus ability). And it remains a Reflex save, instead of a Fortitude save like Horrid Wilting.

If you're really keen on Forcecaging folks, you might want to consider Dimensional Lock. Keep them inside those cages!

Might be too limited a trick to be worthwhile tho.

PS

Quickened Dimension Door. Oops, not what you asked for?

Wasn't Iron Body somewhere around level 8? I really do like it against pesky ability and whatever drainer... and the ASF chance of 50% might disturb you.
