3.5 or 4th edition?

Does how many awards a game gets in a certain year matter to you? :p

Play 4E characters with 1E monsters. Combats will be over very quickly. :)

Were I starting fresh now, I'd be tempted to wait a couple of weeks for Essentials and go that route.

Since your new I suggest picking up the first couple parts of an adventure path for Pathfinder. If you don't like it you have invested less money plus have an idea of what you did and did not like. Pathfinder has a free srd here Pathfinder_OGC that contains most if not all of the rules to play.

Firstly, welcome aboard and congratulations on finding EN World. As young gamers, you guys are in for a whole heap of fun, whichever edition you play.

Secondly, the "Essentials Red Box" would seem to be the perfect starting point for you guys along with the 4e Eberron books. That should get you gaming quickly and easily.

Thirdly, it seems like you have some 3E stuff. You can most likely get some excellent advice on these boards how to convert or port that over. Ask on these boards and someone will go out of their way to help you.

However, personally I would recommend Pathfinder which is the main current supporter of the 3e ruleset. They've added and tweaked things to the rules so that it plays really well and you can still use all your 3e material (Races of Stone?) easily. The adventure paths they run are excellent but I suppose the warning here is that they're good because they are a little more difficult to run and require a greater investment of time to set up. But time is something you have in spades when you're 12 or 13 so knock yourselves out with it all.

Either way, I think you will have loads of fun.

Hi again! :P
What do you prefer and why? 3.5 or 4E? Thanks in advance everyone, I need to know so as to help me choose which edition to play with my group! Also, would 3.5 be easier for new players, since me and my group have never played before?

woah, when i was 12 and 13(which is about when i seriously got into the hobby), i never would have asked for anyone's opinion. when i was 13, i was an arrogant, self-centered moron who couldn't string a sentence together without numerous occurances of the words "like" and or "man."

you coming on here and being respectful and interested in the opinions of others is making me look bad and i won't stand for it, sir, not for a minute!

seriously, welcome to the hobby. i know that it's been a great joy to me for about two decades now, and i'm sure it will treat you just as well.

the heart of the matter is that you can make any system work for you, you just have to know what you're looking for from the game. i've played a fair number of systems over the years, and i won't suggest either of the two options presented, because i think that i'm biased and would only impose on your groups creativity.

if you want my opinion of a good starting system, then here goes: dread

i've fallen in love with the game. in fact, it's the reason that i found enworld, or maybe the other way around, when you get to be my age you forget things. have a look at the long running thread here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/genera...t-up-my-dice-my-results-indie-horror-rpg.html
it's cheap to play and is very roleplaying focused.

in recommending this, i add the caveat that at your age i wouldn't have been as interested in this system as i am now. when i was your age i really just wanted to make things blow up most of the time when i was roleplaying back in the day. only because you seem much more mature and well adjusted, probably even than i am now, do i put this out there for you at all.

welcome to enworld, sir.

Both editions are good. Try 'em both!

420 play D&D everyday.

Right now I play 4E and DM pathfinder. Both editions have strong points; although I admit that I am a bit of a grognard and so have trouble finding 4E combat to be interesting. It might be the inexperience of the group or the trouble of the medium (over internet).

But trying both is not a bad idea.

If you and your group have never played before, get this set:

You are, after all, the target demographic.

Once you have played a couple of adventures, upgrade to the full version or try other games... Pathfinder, Star Wars, Shadowrun, whatever suits your fancy

To get started with, I'd suggest trying out the Essentials set that's due out at the end of this month. It's designed with people just starting out. I'm sure you'd be able to handle the full game, but I think it's a good idea to start with a product that's made with you in mind. I wouldn't suggest Pathfinder unless you have someone with a bit of experience to help you get started... not because it's a bad game, but more because it's a little more complex at the start (in my opinion).

If you have a game store where you live, they may be running a weekly series of games called Encounters, which is a great way to get introduced to 4E. I know that my local store runs a very similar type of game for Pathfinder, so you may have the chance to try both of them out and see which you like best.

Above all, have fun. Gaming is a great hobby, and ENWorld is a great place to talk and ask questions. The one piece of advice I do have is to not take too much of what gets said here that seriously: people have very strong opinions on this game or that, but they're all fun in the end, and it's all about having a good time.
