See? This isn't helping. When people in the 3rd Edition forums express their annoyance at the "get it or get out" attitude of 4th Edition fans, they refer back to posts like this to prove their point.

So please...stop the biting sarcasm and overgeneralizations. If nothing else, you are making 4th Edition sound less appealing to people who mnight still be on the fence about it.

I have to agree with CleverNickName; there is way to much "snark" going on about 3e vs. 4e, and people on BOTH sides of the debate are to blame. EN World is a gamer community that supports all versions of D&D and tons of other roleplaying games. It doesn't matter if it's OGL games or non-OGL games. Everyone is welcome here as long as "we" follow the rules of being civil towards one another.

So, I suggest everyone take a breath and try to remember that D&D (and RPGs, in general) are just games. Just because I might not like 4th Edition doesn't give me the right to make personal attacks against those who do like it.

With all due respect, I think there needs to be a forum rules clarification on this, because evidently I don't know what's civil and what's not.

IMO the most uncivil thing in this thread was the OP's reference to anyone posting a 4E thread performing a certain sex act that might require kneepads, presumably to WotC. This term is often used as an insult that most would consider to be far more crass than any insult to one's intelligence. I consider the OP to be blatantly more offensive than any other post in this thread. At the VERY LEAST, I would think this would seem to not pass the Eric's Grandma test.

Now, normally I would have just reported this, but I've seen three mods in this thread who haven't commented at all about this. Please explain why the OP is considered acceptable according to forum rules while the others are not.

Agreed...all of the pro/con arguments about 4E have a lot of truth to them. But they turn into fights too quickly, I think, because of the way that truth is packaged.

I was at borders yesterday and I saw a lady who worked there re-stock the shelves with the new 4e books. 4e is selling like hotcakes, it is the new king of RPG's, and that's a fact.

I won't be playing 4E, but I'm really glad to hear this. When I got my books, and after I read them...well, I was a little worried. I may not like 4E, but I like WotC and I want them to do well.

Over time, this will die down anyway. I've been mixing my 3.0 campaign with 3.5 bits for years, and I'll mix in 4E bits as well. Bo9S has, as we know, concepts that ended up in 4E, so it's not as if the divide is that big.

And for those of us who do not focus overly much on combat, the gap between 3E and 4E is even narrower - especially if one implements rituals in 3E.

Honestly, I kind of like the knee pads quote. Only because as someone who has been skeptical yet hopeful about 4e I've perused threads around here wherein someone gives an honest question about a perceived flaw to the new edition and are suddenly set upon like bloody meat in a shark tank by people who apparently think that 4e has nothing wrong with it. I've played it and I've played Paizo's Pathfinder and I honestly think Pathfinder is more my game. I have opinions about 4e (some harsh I'll admit, WotC rubbed me the wrong way and I'm still a touch biased) and some that aren't opinions but more questions to the logic of certain mechanics and aspects of the game that I feel I can't post here without getting from the '4e kneepads/zealots/fanboys/whathaveyou' for not kowtowing to the new edition in every aspect.

Thankfully this has cooled down some and I'm not saying the 3e fanboys haven't been out of line either (i.e. $e, the kneepads comment (just 'cause I like it doesn't mean I don't think it goes a little too far) and of course those who simply pick a bandwagon and jump on it loud and obnoxiously in a fashion that irks the people on the other bandwagons. Sadly those who actually try to stay civil, post honest opinions pro or against or simply critical of 3e or 4e choke on dust and possibly get a foot run over or something.

I once complained about the Vancian magic system and how I wanted wizards to have more variety so I house-ruled something that still required memorization but gave a little more flexibility to the normally static wizard (no one amongst my players considered the Sorcerers playable) and I got hell for it for about two pages and that wasn't even what the thread was about. That was just a little house rule I made up and mentioned on the side, I had to tell people I wasn't going to respond to them anymore to get them to shut up, quite annoying to say the least and I'm technically pro-3e. I loved the Rituals concept and thought it was a change in the right direction but poorly implemented but that's neither here nor there and...

I've lost track. I think I'm going to end this now that I'm rambling as I'm want to do when I'm sleep deprived...

Ah. I didn't get that reference. Maybe it's because we're knee deep in gardening at the moment, but all I could think of was kneepads that protect the knees when digging in the flowerbeds.

So I didn't pick up on the uncivility of the OP.
