D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 ~ Second Familiar?

I need to read this feat. if RAW says both get the progression, then I'd not be in a position to object.

It's in Dragon #280, page 62:

The sorcerer or wizard gains all the benefits of both familiars, but identical bonuses from multiple familiars don't stack. For example, a wizard with both an owl and a cat familiar receives only a +2 bonus to Move Silently checks, not a +4 bonus.

I'm currently in a 3.5 campaign and while looking for feats, I stumbled upon the obtain familiar feat, and it gave me a fun idea, I want a second familiar. My DM pretty much OKed it if I can find a legitimate way to do it. I'm allowed to use any book, though he'll still be checking everything over before he allows it. I figured this would be the best place to ask, so how about it, can you guys help me out?

i havent read this entire thread but I have a comment not necessarily a solution to your query.... I have a druid/wizard he has a viper familiar and a viper companion about as close as I can see to having more than one...

I once had a Wizard who made 10 homonoculi ---boy did that turn out to be a mistake.... but old story...

I have a dumb question. How do you get a large familiar? The improved familiar feat does not include any large creatures, and the text implies that only other similarly sized creatures be considered suitable. There aren't even any medium sized creatures in the imp. familiar list. So thats jumping 2 whole size categories. It does not sound like you are using the same set of rules as I do.

"The list in the table above presents only a few possible improved familiars. Almost any creature of the same general size and power as those on the list makes a suitable familiar."

Also, IMO dragon magazine is not a RAW source. Definitely in the territory of house rules/homebrew. A lot of the stuff in there is cool, but a lot of it is also crap and/or way overpowered. ie. Swiftblade

As far as the spell question is concerned. Having 2 familiars should not let you 'double-cast' touch spells. Allowing your personal buffs to effect them, sure. But touch spells are a different issue and essentially twinning touch spells for free is WAY out of line for the cost of a feat.

1) Dragon Magazine is just as RAW and official as any WotC 3e sourcebook. And it's got just about the same awesome:meh:crap ratios as most official products--better than some, actually, like Complete "completely ruined the psionics flavor and mechanics" Psionic and Tome of "only 1/3 of the book is worth the paper it's printed on" Magic.

2) Swiftblade is in a WotC web enhancement. It's not just a Dragon thing anymore.

3) How dare you insult homebrew by comparing it to Dragon and web enhancements!? I bet there are some WotC devs wish they had half the game design talents of some of the homebrewers here and on GitP/BG. ;)

Well, there's only one REAL way to get a large familiar: convince your DM either that a specific familiar of larger than average size is a suitable substitute, based on it's power or CR, or that the DanDWiki's Big Familiar feat should be acceptable (Big Familiar (3.5e Feat) - D&D Wiki) based on the lack of familiar-specific bonus. Other than convincing your DM, the closest you could come is by taking the "Obtain Animal Companion" feat shown in the PHB2, which lets you gain an Animal Companion as per a druid or ranger.

I have two familiars. We used the feat from Dragon to do it. I started the game with a raven and I was planning on taking the improved familiar feat to get a pseudodragon. But I got really attached to my raven so my DM found the feat and that with improved familiar gave me my pseudodragon and let me keep the raven.

I have not found it to be game breaking.
