Acid Fog

Barkskin

Clarification that a creature without natural armor really has a natural armor bonus of +0, so is still eligible for this enhancement bonus to natural armor.

Bear's Endurance

Effects are dependent on caster level rather than a flat HD chart.
Banishment effect allows a will save at a -4 penalty

Word of Recall
Changed to Conjuration (Teleportation) from Transmutation.
Target is now you and up to one other Medium or smaller creature per three caster levels, each of whom may bring along objects up to its max load.
Creatures larger than Medium count as multiple creatures.

Zone of Silence
New spell added to Brd 4 - read for details.

Zone of Truth
Added to Pal 2.
Area changed to 20 ft. radius from 5 ft. radius/level.
No functional changes.

You walk into a store to buy something and initiative is rolled (or can be, most groups dont do this, but for this example work with me ;) ). This just shows when each person will be acting. Say that one of the characters wants to come in and try to do something sneaky but when people come in the shop owner always comes from the back to the front in a single round, which gets to happen first? Initiative is the easiest way to do this.
Can you point to anywhere in the rules that suggest initiative would be rolled as soon as they walk in the door? It may be it is in there and I've just not seen it; however, the only references to rolling initiative that I'm aware of are in the chapter on combat. We've always played that initiative gets rolled once at least one party decides that they're going to be engaging in combatish actions within six seconds, and not before.

Plane Sailing, thanks so much for that! I was really hoping that a list like that existed somewhere.

In a lot of these discussions I read people saying something like "I agree with most of the changes... haste, harm, and heal really needed fixing" -- and I wonder if they really realize "most" of what what they're agreeing to.

And that's a good reason to leave it unchanged? 2e was very different from 3e?

I'm a player of a wizard in an Eberron campaign, and I agree that spell needed to be nerfed. It was either that, or give every monster in the MM series ranged attacks as powerful as their melee attacks. Oh yeah, that was happening. Right. Can't wait to see a tiger's ranged attack, etc.

Good. Way too many high hp dragons abusing that spell.

Hear hear! The rogue can Hide all the time, the wizard has to give up spells to do so, so why did the rogue keep bothering the wizard to cast that spell on him? Now the rogue gets his chance to shine again.

Yep. I found myself metagaming soooo much when I was making NPCs. After about 7th level, every arcane spellcaster I made had to have Haste.

What was that the 3.0 designers used to say about balance? Something like, "if it's so good that everyone has to take it, it's too good," right?

I house ruled this way when 3.5 first came out for buff spells only. Later on, I removed the house rule because I wanted to stick more to the rules as written.

But because of this thread, I have been seriously wondering how extensive I should compare 3E to 3.5 and yank out or modify the changes I do not like for my next campaign.

After reading this sentence, however, it became more clear to me that a simple house rule like this could handle most of that for me. I personally like a lot of the 3.5 changes, I just think they nerfed durations way too much.

But, it is not 1 round per level or 10 minute per level or one hour per level durations that have a problem. It is 1 minute per level durations that are too short for "between combats time" and too long for "within combat time". One minute per level duration is a no mans land of duration that tend to not help the game at all. It's a DND sacred cow that has limited extra utility in the game.


So thanks. I will be adding this house rule into my next campaign, regardless of which spell we are talking about. It solves most of the "they nerfed 3.5" issues for me. :)
 


I also house ruled most of the 1 min./level durations to 10 min./level, just because I prefer magic to be capable of being used as utility and not just combat power.

Most of the spell changes were good, apart from those duration issues I have only very few (i.e. Darkness being weird now, altho it's probably necessary to make it less nasty).
