3e spells database?

Hi there,

Does anyone know whether someone has put the spells in the SRD into a MS Access or similar database? I've seen Excel spreadsheets with certain spell details and the summary description, but I'm thinking of something with the full SRD text and with binary fields for the various qualities a spell can have so that one can easily do searches with a variety of conditions. To take a random example, Clr4 or Clr5 spells that are divinations and require no material component.

Thanks!

FWIW, I am slowly working on such a database... except I intend to include stuff from lots of OGC sources, not just the SRD.

I am currently sitting on about 150 entries and add a few dozen more each week (no free time).

If anyone else has something like this, please let me know - it would be a great help.

EDIT: E-mail me off-thread, Magus, if you want it. It has no SRD spells in it just yet - but I intend to use it (eventually) to drive a website with a spell search database similar to the one you described. It has binary fields for all the descriptors, a field for school and subschool, and a field for spell level (Brd, Clr, Drd, etc.)

Wow, Sigil, that's great. Are you doing this in Access? I don't have much time available, but if I can help a bit I'd like to. Unfortunately I have no experience building or even using databases with Access, although I'm fairly adept with Excel. If you already have the fields set up in the db, would it be possible for you to send that to me and for me to add more spells to help simply by entering the appropriate values into the fields for each one? Also, how flexible are you making it for search/query purposes? Here's an example of my concern with the Excel spell spreadsheets I've seen--there is one column for Components, which looks just like the line out of the PHB/SRD, i.e. letters for all relevant components, separated by commas, all in the same field. Like I said, I don't know how Access works, but I wonder whether that makes it more difficult to query or filter based on components than if you have binary fields for each type of components (S, V, M, F, DF, etc). Same goes for descriptors like Cold, Evil, Mind-Affecting, etc.

Please keep me posted if it's not too much trouble!

Yes, I'm doing it in Access. I might as well just kick it along to you so you can see what I am doing. You should definitely contact me off-thread - it would be great if I could get your help entering stuff into the database. Suffice to say I created a Form in Access that makes entering spell information a "fill-in-the-blanks" and "check the boxes next to the descriptors" exercise. Doesn't get any easier. :)

I am making Descriptors and Components Binary. That should aid greatly in flexibility.
I am making Levels numerical -> 0 through 10 (0 = not on list, 10 = cantrip, as it's easiest to filter out null values as "not on list").
Everything else, I believe is text - but that makes sense to me - you no longer have spells of multiple schools or subschools.

I'll explain in more detail off-thread.

Open Call: Anyone who wants to help out and contribute to this project should talk with me off thread - the_sigil (at) hotmail.com - if we get enough folks, we can do a "division of labor" and get this thing together much quicker. You will need (1) Microsoft Access 2000, and (2) some free time.

Marimmar, if you can send it to me in Excel format, I can convert it to .mdb in no time.

I also found another .mdb in The Complete DM Database.
Once again, no complete description there. :(

Ok, The file from Marimmar is available in .mdb format.
The descriptions have been trimmed when the file got through Excel, I'm afraid.
If someone's interrested, just mail me.

Thanks again, Marimmar! :)

Okay, I corrected the problem with cut off text and sent it to Grey Dwarf again.

And just to clarify this, I didn't create the spell database in FileMaker, I just converted the spells to a more Microsoft compatible format.

Thanks for the FM database go out to Rebecca Glenn.

If either of you (GreyDwarf or Marimmar) could bounce a copy of that my way, I'd appreciate it.

Use publishing(at)cooleys.org for this one (no size limits on the mailbox).

I knew of the Filemaker DB, I just didn't have the time to try to find an easy way to port it.
