4 Stealthy PCs + 1 loud metal paladin = ??

Know that if you ever speak of its place, you will unleash a flood of babble that will cover the world." The old priest coughed painfully. "They are sending a new cleric soon, a young man who I foresee to be impure at heart. He can not be trusted with the secret. Can you?"

"Yes." The old cleric leaned forward to whisper in the paladin's ear, grasping the knight's holy symbol in one claw-like hand. The symbol glowed brightly, and try as he might the paladin's roguish friend couldn't make out any words from where he hid beneath a nearby pew.

"Within the steeple, beneath the bells, above the basement, there he dwells." As the words are spoken, the knight feels a a silence slip over him, and the old priest's eyes glaze. "Eh.. hello? Who are you, young man?"

(The tomb is in a tiny demiplane suspended in mid-air beneath the bells, accessible only when the bells are ringing. So long as the paladin keeps this secret, he is granted a +10 competence bonus to Move Silently. If he ever tells anyone, the bonus disappears - and some sort of bad plot stuff happens. Meanwhile, enemies of this Silent Saint begin tracking him down...)

That's one way to handle it. Make it a campaign hook, not an item, and get some good mileage out of it!

Stealth items are a good idea. Also, a bracelet of friends is an awesome item in general, has particular use for this group. The sneaky guys can infiltrate some place, then summon the paladin to fight the big evil guy.
 

One option is to get him armor of Shadow/Silent Moves, to help mitigate the big walking tincan syndrome.

The other one is to let him be a walking tincan, and have the party use that to their advantage. Sneaking is all well and good, but sneaking around while the paladin serves as a distraction could be even better.

Throw some social situations their way, a few undead, some creatures who've used divination, some tricky light-users....some chances for the Paladin to shine, in other words.

The others can shine at times, too....just make sure to design some things that stealth can't solve.
 

Piratecat, you are a genius. Your post knocked down a wall in my mind. I may, in fact, steal that wholesale. ;)

Armor of shadow/silent moves might be nice, too. I'll give that some thought.
 

I'm thrilled it works for you! Your post got me thinking, too, and that just sort of came out. Note that you can easily tie the bonus to move silently to level, or arrange for it to remove the armor check penalty from any armor the paladin wears. Since it isn't a "known quantity", it's easy to play around with and tweak.

Just make sure you give him enough challenges and enemies to make the bonus worthwhile. An adventure where they have to sneak into the fort of an enemy of the faith, and he only succeeds because of the bonus, would be especially fun. :D
 

It could be that the secret adds Shadow/Silent Moves to any armor he wears.

I especially like that it creates a nemesis for the player that will hound him, as well as create a known condition under which the bonus will disappear, all while making the PC unique in the world. Brilliant. It even creates enemies from within the paladin's faith--clerics and authorities who may believe that the paladin is working counter to Heironneous' wishes and who might seek to shackle him--or even clergy who've become so obsessed with the secret that they've unknowingly turned their backs on their deity and no longer serve his will.

So awesome.

This is why I like Piratecat, and Piratecat's DM style. Most DMs and players would say "let the players deal with the problem" or "solve the problem with money (items)". Piratecat doesn't even perceive the problem as a problem; he takes the issue and transmogrifies it into a fun campaign feature.

Piratecat's suggestion is very creative, but personally I'm against it. Basically it's an ability that's twice as powerful as boots of elvenkind, for free, using no equipment slots. And the reason for it is to compensate for something that is completely the player's choice. Clearly, he wants the heaver armor for the ac bonus! In my book he's got to make a choice. Or, as another poster suggested, maybe give the others free ac bonuses to compensate. I dunno, it just doesn't seem right to reward a player for being stubborn.

Plus, what's wrong with being stubborn? Let the players do what they want! It's not the DM's party, it's the players' party! There are lots of good suggestions here on what to do. I say just go with it. See what happens. :)
 

I do like Piratecat's suggestion. :)

Make Mr. Noisy louder! The enemy will never hear the other 4 creeping around. ;)
