You know, Faerun is a D&D world...nothing wrong for her to hang there - it's relatives! And good relatives. ;)

Now, if she hanged around Eragons or Potters... ;)

a desperate cry for help from a game that's afraid to grow old and afraid to grow up.

Please.

Your analogy is wrong.
D&D is not 'Stacy's mom.'
It's the 'disgruntled D&D grognard' that is Stacy's Mom.

D&D is the vehicle in this analogy.
Some grognard's will never trade in their D&D half-orc minivan, no matter what sad, tired shape it's in. Others of us, even those that lived through the 80's--but chose to leave them behind--will take the sporty dragonborn roadster.

I will always prefer the refurbished 1957 Chevy.

I don't know how that fits into this little analogy, I just thought I'd share.

D&D might end up being very popular with those virile youngsters for all the wrong reasons. The only thing a teenaged male likes more than a milf is a milf who puts out.

Sigged.

But in all seriousness, I think the OP is making a valid point. Underneath the designers' enthusiasm (genuine, no doubt) I do detect the slightest whiff of a fear that may just be a trace of something like desperation.

Let's hope 4E puts out good.
