D&D 4E 4E Challenge: Design a TPK

So far ambush by 4 Needlefang Drake Swarms (credit goes to Mengu for really pushing how over the top this would be) seems like a strong contender.

Can you top that?

Nope. Those things are rabid piranhas with legs. Even in a 10' corridor... but especially if they're ambushing in an open area from cover (like a jungle, ala Jurassic Park).

A Legion Devil Veteran and a Legion Devil Hellguard. The pair stands next to one another at the start of the fight then teleport so that they flank a target and just proceed to whale on him. The Hellguard should hit the most heavily armoured of party members 85% of the time (counting Combat Advantage gained via Flanking), while the Veteran should hit 95% of the time.

When they both hit, they'll do 13 points of damage, so it may take them a few rounds to take down a PC, but they've got time. They can only be hit on a Natural 20, and take no damage from a Miss.

If you ask me, that's going to pretty much snuff out a group of first level PCs, unless luck is on their side.

Engagement means a lot.
Can you see/hear them coming?
Can you get a surprise round?
Do you have an action point to spend?
During those two rounds do you have daily powers to let loose?
Does your encounter power hit?
Did you win inititive?
Did you position/co-ordinate/roll well that first round?

And they havn't even acted yet, and they don't have magic items or other inovations. (Invisible Gnomes on the other hand)...

However if anyone has seen Prince Caspian The Mouse Paladin has a good scene in the forrest (under cover of jungle undergrowth) against a squad of human fighters...scary.

Odd, but I never have thought of Reepicheep as a Paladin.

He certainly fits the part. In fact, as a Paladin, he's got to be one of the coolest most noble Paladins in literature.

Not that I'm saying I want to play a furry game or anything.

A big factor that goes into TPK is one to kill party members like its going out of style, but you also have to prevent those last few from running away.

For this, I give another point to the needledrake. With 7 speed and the ability to knock people prone, you can't get away from this thing. That chuul looks bad, but at least I can run.

By "we" does that mean all the monsters that anyone has seen, or all the monsters that everyone has seen?

Ohhh! Can you get us the 4e statblock for a gazebo? or at least a placebo? :)

1) There are not nearly enough posts on Morrus gloating or Celebrim's furry fantasies.

2) Keterys says 5 1s could take the Chuul, I agree based on the XP dragon (which some parties did take out)...

Thread necro time!

Now that we (well, some of us) have the books, what's our best 500 xp TPK encounter?

For me, I'll have to go with 3 Warhorses, coming in at 150xp each.

They have this ability:

* Trample (Standard At-Will): The warhorse can move up to its speed and enter enemies' spaces. This movement provokes opportunity attacks, and the warhorse must end its move in an unoccupied space. When it enters an enemy's space, the warhorse makes a trample attack: +4 vs. Reflex; 1d6+6 damage, and target is knocked prone.

They've also got a speed of 8.

If they start their turn adjacent to a PC who is himself adjacent to another PC, one horse can make 7 trample attacks against those two PCs.

And we've got three of them.

That's a lot of attacks.

Any other good killer 500xp encounters out there?

Cheers,
Roger
