D&D 4E 4e Core Gods

Wartorn posted the following in the "worlds and monsters is in my hands ";

Zehir: God of Night (modeled on Set so possibly also God of Chaos)

Anyone add further clarity or identify more gods (despite the comment of only having 21)?

On the bottom of the minitures card for the Yuan-Ti Champion of Zehir it says "Zehir, the serpentine deity of lies and darkness, finds his greatest champions among the yuan-ti"

Zehir may therefore be better described as the God of Darkness and Lies rather than Night

Orcus: (Maybe back to his mythological roots - "God of the Underworld" - with a DnD Flavour)

I'm reasonably sure that Orcus was confirmed as not a god for 4e. I believe he appears as an epic level adversary in the MM (and earns the cover art as a result).

If that's the case then we're missing one god on your list above. Obad-hai has been mentioned, but I would prefer to see him folded into Melora as you suggest.

Thanks..will update the OP.

That does further marginalize Lolth though from one of her traditional portfolios - Darkness.

Mind in the Epic Level comments in Races & Classes it is said that PCs should be able to take on Gods - so Orcus might still be a God, he just might be the first one to get that ultimate target on his chest - aka Stats. (If it has stats it can be killed - a great RPG maxim ;))

Wow. I didn't realize that we weren't going to have Thor and others. That sucks... Ah well... that's what's great about having my own campaign. I can't edit the gods how I see fit.

Here's what I was basing my comments on, from the EN World Unofficial 4e News page:

# Who's in and who's out? "...plenty of monsters will be in MM1, but not all the monsters you expect to see in D&D will be. Those that have a home in the new edition will eventually see release, however. Sometimes they'll even get a polish that makes them into something more useful and compelling, and maybe even more mythologically accurate."

* Orcus will be in the MM. Grazzt will be in the Demonomicon on D&D Insider in October. (source).

* Chris Perkins -- "In case you're wondering, Asmodeus won't be joining Orcus in the new MM because, as I previously hinted, the Lord of the Ninth is getting a promotion to god status in 4E. His holy (unholy?) symbol will be among those appearing in the Player's Handbook"

Emphasis mine.

That seems to imply that Asmodeus = God. Orcus = Not a god (he's called the Demon Lord of Undead elsewhere on the 4e page). Also the quote implies that Asmodeus is one of our 21 core gods whereas Orcus will not be included. But granted, things could have changed since Chris Perkins made those comments.

That's pretty persuasive I'll change his status to "in doubt" then. Leaving 1 God to be determined if the others are all correct.

I wouldn't be surprised if Torog was a Thor concept, like Zehir is a Set concept. Maybe they will list some with "Alternate Names" and the classical mythology names will be in there?

Keep in mind there were 21 at the time of printing... things can change.

Honestly, Erathis is rather weak... there will probably be a couple of patron deities thrown into the mix if there has to be.

I am just wondering if they are jump starting the line all over again or still paying homage to former editions. For Example, Humans like to picture their Deities in their own image... therefore if Bahamat is worshipped in Human societies... it is as the Platinum Knight. When he appears to human worshipers in their time of need... to give hope and reaffirm faith... he takes the form of a young human knight going by the name Heironeous.

Just a thought,
William Holder

Overall I really like the list. Thanks for putting this together Cailte.

However, I'm surprised by the lack of deities for certain common portfolio's-

Death (Undeath) edit: I guess the Raven Queen covers this.
Sea
Storms
Love
etc.

I know that they wanted to make the PHB deities relevant to adventurers, but these seem like common enough domains to show up in many campaigns (except perhaps Love).

Hmm wouldn't it make more sense to have Grummsh in the mM, seeing as its an orc deity and there are no orc/half-orc write-ups.

I think the notion of racial deities is going by the wayside. Gruumsh will no longer be an exclusive patron of orcs (see the Fractured Family Dragon article where evil inclined elves are mentioned as sometimes worshiping the savage god Gruumsh).
