My 'retcon' of the Dragonborn intoy own campaign world was just the hoary old "traveler from a far land" trope. One that relies on the tropes and themes Dragon discussed in its twilight around Asia-themed adventures. That was just to give the one such character which appeared in our game and interesting backstory and feel, but it is a pretty workable technique.
