D&D 4E 4e: Isn't it ironic....

Relique du Madde

I noticed some strange ironic (not really) conicidences with the eminent announcment of 4e..

1. Dragon and Dungeon Magazine are no more.
2. Monte Cook is officially retired from the gaming industry and the release of his last RPG (MC World of Darkness) coincides with the announcement of 4th edition.
3. R'lyeh has arizen off the coast of Peru causing a massive earthquake. Great Cthulhu has devouered 450 people.. the next edition of DnD after 4e will be 4.5e
4. Human sacridice, cats and Dogs are living together, and mass hysteria has all been in the news recently.
5. My post count is over 450.
6. All our base belongs to WoTC.

I've noticed one cool thing that is very different than at the beginnings of 3rd edition ... our community is already here, ready to talk about it. There won't be 8 months of news without a messge board to discuss it on. There won't be months of word of mouth as this site grows from a few hits per day to thousands. There won't be a string of new URLs as the site and the forums move around from home to home. That's kind of neat...

Gah, help me remember -- did WotC even have real "forums" in '99? They had some kind of newsgroup thingy as I recall. And the WotC website was, what, the beholder with each eye as a hyperlink leading to different parts of the site? And SKR was webmaster?

I would if I could, but the whole thing passed me by.

I'd never so much as looked at a single non-work related website in those days.

My brother did send me an email about 3rd edition at some point - I seem to remember him thinking the new rules were very weird, and had all the charm sucked out of them. He also complained that his elven fighter 4 / wizard 4 / thief 4 would become something like fighter 2 / wizard 2 / rogue 2, which clearly wasn't fair.

These days, SKR seems to be a World of Warcraft fan.

No, but I kinda mess the newsgroup-setup. Those were the days...

I was thinking about this...I didn't really know anything about it (3rd) except for the scans of those shirts that where posted here and there.

But before WotC, remember TSR: no website, just AOL...Sean K Reynolds was brought in to build that early website. EDIT: actually I think they had just built it, and he came on board.
