Just perusing "the shaping of middle-earth" when I encountered this bit, concerning the original warring between dwarves and elves over a giant pile of cursed dragon-gold:
"There many Elves and Dwarves were slain, and the howe wherein they were laid in Doriath was named Cum-nan-Arasaith, the Mound of Avarice."
The 4e wizard spell "visions of avarice" must be directly inspired from this; it's a big pile of gold treasure that is arguably cursed! (especially if you cast it on a pool of lava).
So next time you cast this spell just remember all the treasure, dwarves and elves involved...
Was visions of avarice ever in an earlier edition? Is this a complete fluke? What other obscure lotr connections are there in dnd?
