D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

If it's taken from Dante's The Divine Comedy, then it's Italian, not French.

By the way, it means more or less "evil claws".

My only requirement on names is that I need to be able to pronounce them. If the name requires a pronounciation guide, then "war devil" is infinitely superior. Hell, I'll take Golden Adept Devil over a name I need a guide for.

Beside, if the name literally means "evil claws", doesn't that make it a compound name? I always get a chuckle when D&D uses foreign names for creatures and when you translate them back, you realize the English version is something mundane (most of the dinosaurs are prime examples of this)

I don't believe that Charm will have effects other than those indicated in the power. A PC under the succubus Charm will still be able to move away from her and attack the succubus's allies. I'm pretty confident about this, based on 4E design philosophy. Remember how adamant the designers are about removing effects that take PCs out of the entire combat? No way the the kiss-Charm would be allowed to last the whole combat, with no saving throw each round, if it wasn't still allowing the kissed PC to participate in the fighting.

If the succubus wants to keep the charmed PC's protection, she's just going to have to move along with him. Thanks to the turn-based way D&D combat works, I think that'll be plenty useful.

Also, that's the way that charm worked in 3.X anyway. You may not attack the one who charmed you, but you could still butcher the allies of the enchanter, and charm didn't make you go against your own allies. Now, 4th edition charm only has an added effect that clarifies that you will be at least willing to throw yourself in harm's way for your new best friend.

comparing some of the special powers from previous editions:

3.5 edition brief highlights
Special Attacks: Energy drain, spell-like abilities, summon tanar'ri
Special Qualities: Damage reduction 10/cold iron or good, darkvision 60 ft., immunity to electricity and poison, resistance to acid 10, cold 10, and fire 10, spell resistance 18, telepathy 100 ft., tongues
Spell-Like Abilities: At will—charm monster (DC 22), detect good, detect thoughts (DC 20), ethereal jaunt (self plus 50 pounds of objects only), polymorph (humanoid form only, no limit on duration), suggestion (DC 21), greater teleport (self plus 50 pounds of objects only).
Summon Tanar'ri (Sp): Once per day a succubus can attempt to summon 1 vrock with a 30% chance of success.

(snip)

I got bored by the time I reached "resistance to acid 10". Seriously.

Ssshh, I was just arguing for argument sake. Don't spoil it with logic.

I see no reason to believe that the CHARM tag carries any other penalties than those listed in the power description. I know that some people are HOPING that there's more to it, or more explanation, but I don't see any reason to think that there is.

Has WotC said that the tags certain abilities have will be explained in more detail in another section of the book? If so, then that's awesome. Until they say that, though, we have to go by what we see, and not factor in what we hope for.

Personally, if the Kiss ability listed only has the effects as written, I'll be very disappointed. I'll fix it, of course, to make the Kiss ability of a Succubus sustain the Dominate power (maybe) or at least some other for of Charm effect. Too bad they wasted the potential.

I believe they said that all powers will have key-words that are explained somewhere.

Did they? In that case, I hope the tag has some description to it that will give us a bit more "play" with the ability. Thanks man.

So an immobilized (or otherwise utterly lacking in available movement), charmed guy can interpose himself between an immobilized succubus and an angry person on the opposite side of her. Yay! Lets not get into what happens if the succubus gets enlarged, or what happens if people want to interpose themselves without the benefit of charm... Note that wanting to take a hit for someone else comes up a lot in DnD.

"Allosaurus itself is based on YPM 1930, a small collection of fragmentary bones including parts of three vertebrae, a rib fragment, a tooth, a toe bone, and, most useful for later discussions, the shaft of the right humerus (upper arm). Othniel Charles Marsh gave these remains the formal name Allosaurus fragilis in 1877. Allosaurus comes from the Greek allos/αλλος, meaning "strange" or "different" and saurus/σαυρος, meaning "lizard" or "reptile". It was named 'different lizard' because its vertebrae were different from those of other dinosaurs known at the time of its discovery."

(My favourite.)

And yay succubus. Always remember that these things have friends (really important for controllers and leaders). "Snaketongue assassin" sounds like some kind of snake cultist, and the "crushgrip constrictor" might be some kind of material plane monster too. It won't have devilish buddies except in special cases.
