Heh. Seeing all these little bits on different days has given my brain the impression that Rouse only owns that one shirt, and wears it every day.

Oh no, not another soap dodging gamer!

…At least he doesn't have a ponytail…

Too much dragon, not enough adventurer for the PHB cover. If the dragon was background and the adventurers foreground it would be fine.
BUT...

If the dragon is in the background and the heroes are in the foreground, they'll most likely have their backs turned to the viewer.

Which, while acceptable for, say, Fiery Dragon's BattleBox,

wouldn't look too keen on the cover of the cornerstone book of an entire gaming line.

No, but his Simpsons avatar does, doesn't it?

Maybe he just thinks that shirt is Teh Awesome and feels "cool" wearing it. That's the word they like at WotC, right? Cool?

;)

That, or they could be running away from the dragon. Or the dragon is sneaking behind them like Shelob with Frodo. Or both of them are in a corner of the pic. Wait, it does not work, this is a cover, not a screen.

Anyway, there is already a dragon on the DMG, a demon on the MM. There should be a diamond on the PHB. Or something like that.

This is my fault.

I've been saying for a few years that D&D needs a Steve Jobs.
Ever notice how Steve Jobs wears an identical black turtleneck EVERYWHERE.

Scott Rouse has seen my posts and the Flowered Shirt is his version of the Black Turtleneck.

The tiefling on the cover of the PHB is basically the classic Satan. Now despite being a demon prince in the game, Orcus doesn't look all that demonic. Sure is red and has horns but he's also got a tail, wings, bulging muscles, and a rhino's face. To someone who doesn't know anything about D&D, the tiefling would appear much more fiendish.

I think it's less this and more "The big evil red guy is a monster so that's okay but the evil looking guy in a dress is a PC and that's bad" issue.

My gut reaction at any rate.
