D&D 4E 4E "Return to" adventures

KotB, ToEE and Queen of the Spiders as one huge story-arc reaching into the epic levels would be the ultimate D&D nostalgia adventure path, methinks.

- Return to the Demonweb Pits
- Return to the Steading of the Hill Giant Lord
- Return to the Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl
- Return to the Forge of Fury
- Return to the Haunted Halls of Eveningstar
- Return to the Shady Dragon Inn (for lots of cool characters!)

I'd love to see returns to several dozen different dungeons, just because it would be neat to see them again (plus, the maps are already made, so it'd take less time to make the adventures!) :p

Well, not so much. That's what I was talking about before. The theories behind 4E encounter design are very different. Many--perhaps even most--of the maps would need to be at least altered, and a few redesigned from scratch.

Mouse, can you point to something from the Delve's layout that might give us a better idea of what you're hinting at?

Well, how about I point you, instead, to James Wyatt's Dungeons of Greenbriar Chasm article? http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dudc/20080213a

You'll note how, since he used an old map, he had to combine multiple rooms into a single encounter area. This is because of 4E's greater focus on A) multiple foes and B) far greater mobility.

Now, in converting a lot of the old dungeons, you can often do what he did--combine multiple rooms into one encounter. But that's not always going to work. In some instances, you're going to need to at least tweak the maps to bring rooms together, or to make some of the encounter areas a lot larger than they are, to allow for the sorts of movement 4E encourages.

Instead of "Return to" they should spiffy up the titles more, follow after "The Matrix" model of naming, how about:

Tomb of Horrors Reloaded
Demonweb Pits Revolution
Vault of the Drow Reloaded
Ravenloft Revolution

Or video game influences like Battlefield Vietnam updated edition:

Temple of Elemental Evil Redux

Or model them after DVDs:

Oasis of the White Palm - Unrated - Director's Cut
White Plume Mountain - Extended Special Edition

Something besides "Return to," starts getting old, but I would like to see older mods updated though.

Can't do Return to Tomb of Horrors, they got rid of all the cool save or die stuff (and even the no save and die stuff)...

I think a good one would be to do a combo Return to the Sentinal and Gauntlet (not very catchy, but two good adventures which are linked)

Giant series would work well with the new system.

Return to Bone Hill/Assasins Knot would be good too, put the skill check and trap mechanisms through their paces.

Reverse the antagonist and have a Dragonborn party in Return to the Cult of the Reptile God.

Return to the Desert of Desolation (Make it a grand module and include the rest of the I series in there)

Return of the Slavers (what's this; points of light campaign world, minions, skill checks, trap xp, this one has to be done by someone)
