I think a lot of people forget that for some, playing = DM'ing

Good point. I usually assume the posters are DMs. Most players I know who post are 1) looking for ways to optimize their PCs or 2) complaining how their DM is an arse or 3) looking for advice on DMing their first session or 4) how their game sucks.

You got it exactly back to front. Jack is saying WoW is bad, but 3.5 is worse.

My point he was comparing apples to oranges. Unless he's talking about the 3.x version of the game?

Personally, I wouldn't mind GMing AD&D or Classic Traveller either.

There are few games I own & play I wouldn't GM, either.

However, there are some exceptions, like GURPS. I'll play GURPS, but I don't care for it, and won't GM it.

HERO, M&M, D&D? I'm happy on either side of the screen.

Utility is fungible.

Yes, he's talking about 3.5. As in, it's so bad, even WoW is better.

Ah. So it's better to play an MMO than a tabletop rpg. Got it.

Huh. Then why is he bothering playing any tabletop rpg, including 4E?

I do believe we have a failure to communicate. It is indeed better to play an MMO than a crap RPG. Just as it is better to play an MMO than have your teeth pulled, be in a car crash, invest in Bear Stearns shares, get involved in a land war in Asia, and so on. Of course, one may quibble about the degree of crappiness at which the decision boundary is set, but the underlying principle is valid. There is nothing magical about the category of things called "tabletop RPGs" that means the utility gained from playing them must uniformly exceed that gained from playing MMOs.

Huh. Then why is he bothering playing any tabletop rpg, including 4E?

Because a good RPG is better than an MMO.

I don't see MMOs compared to tabletop rpgs by the simple lack of face-to-face communication. To me, it's like making out in the flesh with someone you have the hots for versus watching an XXX movie. Both are satisfying but in their own way....

And to Jack, MMOs are crappy compared to good RPGs. Unfortunately, crap RPGs are even more crappy than MMOs. Simple, isn't it?

Exactly. Apples and oranges.
I do believe we still have a failure to communicate. Apples are apples and oranges are oranges, but the utility one derives from the consumption of apples and oranges can be compared. Just as one can say that one doesn't like MMOs, but even an MMO is better than, say, getting your teeth pulled. The things in question are totally different, but it nevertheless remains possible to make a meaningful choice when presented with these alternatives. Just like whether being in a car crash is better than an MMO. Or investing in Bear Stearns shares is better than an MMO. Or playing 3.5 is better than an MMO.
