Baern tries to hide the anger on his face, and in his voice. "I comed through the gates just after the sun sat," he says with deliberate calm. "Then found an inn with a small room and a big mug, and gave many thanks to Blackmoor himself."

Well, that could certainly have gone better.[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]You've succeeded on the skill challenge. To Holyman, the number of required checks is DM-only knowledge. The following sblocks are the results of your insight checks. I'll wait until tomorrow or until we hear from Thorn, Thom, and Squeal to continue.[/sblock]

[sblock=Doren]You seem to be making a strong argument for yourself. The barrister seems to not truly count you as a suspect.[/sblock]

[sblock=Torath]You get the feeling that the barrister truly believes you, and that he doesn't seem to be fully convinced that any of you is the killer. In fact, he seems almost sure of it.[/sblock]

Thorn kept her face downcast, but listened intently to the stories of the others. They seemed genuine to her, which perversely made her more worried. This wasn't a case of mistaken identity. The more she heard, the more she thought none of them were the killer. No city guard was THAT incompetent, unless they were ordered to be.

They were looking for a scapegoat, not a real killer, and that was bad news. It wouldn't be hard to prove innocence to a court that cared about innocence. But this court just wanted a head in a noose, and anyone's would do. She just had to make sure it wasn't hers.

"I stayed at the Oak's Bough," she explained. "I had a drink...stayed talking to the bartender for a bit, asking about the city, then went to bed. The man at the bar, I didn't ask his name, but he was a broad man, with russet and gray hair and a thick beard. He might remember me. It seemed a fairly quiet night there."

Thom - Summoner Wizard

Thom was certain of two things: one, the rules of law were put in place in order to allow fair and equitable administration of justice; and two, this particular process was going to be neither fair nor equitable. Though, seeing the Barrister's response, he wasn't convinced that this inequity originated within the court.

"If it pleases the court, I spent the whole of last night in my own home. Most evenings I spend alone in my study, so I have no witness to this.

My arrest early this morning was the first I had heard of the crime that I, and these others, have been accused."

After he spoke, he waited to hear the evidence against him. Hoping that with more information he might better understand what was really going on.

Squeal, Warforged Barbarian

The warforged looks around, uncertain.

It tries to remember what has happened in the past few days but has a blank in its memory, from the time it was commanded to stand still while its master hit it with weapons, till being awakened in a fisher's net in the harbour this morning.

Squeal looks up at the court "This one appears to have spent the evening at the harbour"

The barrister nods and thanks each of you in turn, and then replies.

“Very well. The prosecution will now present evidence in the case of the murder of Damarch Hood. Each of you was reported of suspicious activity on the night of the murder: Baern Stoneheart, you arrived at the Oak's Bough pub, your hammer drenched in blood. Miss Thorn, the man at the bar you mentioned - that man was Lieutenant Farks of the City Guard. Your rather direct methods of questioning motivated him to notify the local patrolmen. In his own words, he viewed your curiosity as "unusual." This was when you and Mister Stoneheart were taken in for questioning. The rest of you were taken in on similar pretenses: either you've arrived recently in town, or you were sighted in the castle square on the night of the murder."

Barrister Trite looks down at his documents, scans each of your faces, then reads from the paper in his hand.

“This evidence, taken as a whole, suggests numerous possibilities in the death of Lord Hood. Taken separately, however, they provide a rather inconclusive picture. I now present Captain Scultone of the Dragonborn Corps of Royal Guards with his recounting of the events of that night.”

The barrister steps back, and a lumbering, rust-colored Dragonborn, garbed in heavy, ornate armor and carrying the traditional battleaxe of the Dragonborn Corps, emerges from an adjacent room. He is a massive, old, and powerfully built being with a genial presence. He stands in the center of the room and addresses the crowd matter-of-factly.

“Good day. I am Captain Talon Scultone of The Royal Guards, Leader of the Dragonborn Corps, and personal bodyguard to Lord Hood for over 60 years. Three nights ago, Lord Hood had retired to his bedchamber in the castle after dismissing my men and I for the evening. I noticed nothing unusual about that night, but one of the midnight patrolmen awoke me to alert me that there had been an intruder in the king’s wing of the castle. I took a squad of comrades to Lord Hood’s chamber, where we found his door ajar. Inside, there was obvious evidence of a struggle. Tables and chairs were overturned, and there were pools of blood splashed all over the floor. Lord Hood’s body was found stuffed underneath his bed. I analyzed the corpse with the aid of the Mrs. Libra Kell.”

The dragonborn appears to have finished his story. The judge motions that Scultone is dismissed. The barrister, then approaches the center of the room and calls his final witness. Libra Kell is a young, wry-looking gnomish female. She enters from the front entrance of the courthouse and stands in the center.

The barrister asks, “Doctor Kell, can you briefly present the court with your findings?”

Kell smiles gently, bows, and begins. “Certainly. Lord Hood was stabbed in the left side, first. It was the deepest and most grievous of the twelve injuries he sustained in the altercation. He was stabbed a total of 10 times in the left side of his body and chest with a dagger of about six inches in length. The other two injuries were more cosmetic: a broken nose, probably incurred from a punch or headbutt during the scuffle, and finally, a large burn across his back, as if splashed by acid.”

Without further gory details, Kell takes her leave, and is again replaced by the barrister. Trite turns to look at the judge, who simply shakes his horned head. The barrister turns to address you.

“At this time, there is not enough evidence to convict or acquit any of you. However, there have been a number of confirmed sightings of another suspect, who has continued to elude capture. Tomorrow, we will discuss the possibility of further investigation. Until then, you will be escorted back to your cell. The court will reconvene at midday.”

A cadre of guards lead you back to your cell in the dungeon of Castle Hood itself, where you’re unchained and given food. The guards leave you unsupervised for the night, although the cell door seems secure and strong. It seems like this might be the best time to get to know each other.

Thy wounds are healed!
Standing near the cell door Torath places his hands around the bars in a firm grip. "It is an affront to Blackmoor's Justice that they keep us even when they say they have no proof. I would think that Munsu himself seeks to taunt me." The young man turns away from the bars to address the group. "I tell you what, that barrister knew we were innocent, I could see it in the man's eyes. By The Four, whoever has done this will not get away with it." With a small embraced grin the young stops his rant, and clears his thoat. "Ah-hum, Sorry I did mean to be bolestrous it is just..." he looks around and seems to come to a realization. "I haven't even introduced myself, I am Torath of the Isles, servant of The Four." Torath says with a small nod to the group.

Doren turns to those present and smiled charismatically....

"You heard the barrister himself... they have no evidence on us... I know the barrister from my dealings with sentencing with the city guard here in Blackmoor... he is a fair and just man and will not convict upstanding members of the city like me and those of us gathered here who are innocent... rest assured we will be set free once this is all sorted out" the priest uttered softly... then paused a bit for some thought

"To be honest with you I wish I was free to track down this other person the barrister mentioned.. my expertise in this area I'm sure would benefit them greatly in their search... Doren added with a sigh... "Alas I cannot do so.. lets just hope they catch this other suspect quickly.. I hate being on this side of justices bars...."

Doren paused a moment... then he too forgot he had yet to introduce himself.... "oh... and where are my manners... I am Doren Kar of the 31st barracks, diplomacy division... I am also a devote follower of Blackmoor. May his reign of law and balance be forever upheld." the proud priest proclaimed before sitting back down once more on his cot and drifting into thought and contemplation...
