[4e] The Wolfcrown, Chapter 1

[sblock=OOC to DF] Yea I kinda figured that but wasn't 100% sure though.... thanks for the clarify... what I meant by 'area' was in the area of finding and arresting criminals.... however I still think my character with his experience with criminal procurement and pre-judgement (a.k.a. arresting people) would still be useful heh.... think of Doren as a beat-cop/lawyer/priest of the law.... and you pretty much got the jist of my character concept heh....[/sblock]

[sblock=rathan]yeah, i gotcha. no worries.[/sblock]

[sblock=sidenote to yzard and shayuri]This may seem like an unusual request, but i've been noticing that it's a bit hard to distinguish the names Thom and Thorn with their spellings. They look almost exactly the same at a glance. Would it be possible for one of you to change the spelling of your character's name? I'd really appreciate that.[/sblock]

[sblock=Thom = Thomas]
No worries, Thom's name is more amenable to change so he will begin using his full name from now on :)

I noticed the same thing and have done a couple of double-takes when Thorn is referenced

Thomas, Summoner Wizard

"My name is Thomas, pleased to meet you all - well, as pleased as I can be in our current situation.

"I agree that it seems the barrister had much doubt about our involvement. However, casting a wide net for such a crime as this is, I am sure, somewhat standard practice. They have to assume that one or more of us (including the missing suspect) has some knowledge of the crime. It's either that or they have no suspects whatsoever, and that wouldn't look good at all.

"I grew up here and so am familiar, at least in passing, with the personalities involved. Much of what we have seen has been sincere and I believe that they will strive for justice.

"My real concern is if no other evidence is uncovered around this crime. This other suspect...the barrister said that he had so far eluded capture. Given his position as Barrister, I would assume that he chooses his words carefully.

"So there is another suspect out there that is actively evading the authorities. It would seem that our hope (if indeed, none of us here are guilty) lies in this person being located and found to be guilty."

He paused and looked at each of the others in turn.

"My life's work has been as a scholar and a practicing wizard, focused on the area of summoning. I haven't had much opportunity to get to know the kind of people that might be able to track someone down..."

He left the sentence unfinished and again met the eyes of those around him - hoping that someone might be able to finish it.

Squeal, Warforged Barbarian

Squeal looks around at the others in the cell. "This one is known as Squeal" the warforged tell his cell mates "This one does not believe it had anything to do with the murder, as it does not use acid." Squeal looks down at its oversized hands and continues "daggers are also a problem"

Something clicked in Thorn's head. Something that had been bouncing around there for quite awhile by now.

Was it common practice to tell suspects in a case like this that another suspect was still running around? Didn't that give them all the opportunity to point their collective fingers at 'that guy you haven't caught yet?'

Thorn was no wizard, no master intellectual, but she had some experience with crime and punishment, and how the law looked from the other side. No one told a suspected criminal anything, unless it was for a good reason.

And Thomas had just given her the last piece. Was it intentional? Was he guiding them gently to that conclusion? No way to know. She wouldn't put it past the barrister though, to have a plant in the bunch.

"That's what this is all about, you think? They can't find this guy, so they're strongarming us into doing it for them?" She smirked. "Giving us plenty of incentive to care, aren't they?"

While you talk, the night, in all its density, creeps sleepily among the depths of Castle Hood’s dungeon. Suddenly, as if roused from some primordial slumber, the quietness of the dungeon evaporates. You hear the sound of a solitary figure lumbering toward your cell. The clanking of his armor and the heaviness of his breathing communicate that your visitor is a tall, powerful being. You hear a raspy intake of breath, and with its exhalation comes a spray of fire that lights the torches mounted in the wall.

Captain Scultone stands before you, bedecked in battle gear and carrying a large sack over his shoulder.

“Prisoners, you have to get up! By Blackmoor’s fist, you have to get up! Your lives are in danger. I’ve just gotten intelligence that says the murderer is still out there, and by the fire in my lungs, he wants you lot dead. His only hope must’ve been one of you taking the fall for him. He must know that the judge was going to acquit you tomorrow. Now, he needs to have you silenced. Take these and go to The Fancy Drake. I’ll meet you there at sunrise, and we’ll hunt the bastard down together. Stay low and stay quiet.”

Scultone unlocks the cell door, opens it, and hands you the bag he was carrying. In it, you find the equipment that was confiscated from you when you were arrested.

[sblock=Equipment]You now have access to the equipment you purchased at character creation.[/sblock]

“Be careful navigating this dungeon and the castle. There are still patrols about, but they’re loyal to the king. Don’t let them stop you, but by Adele’s mercy, don’t kill ‘em. Now go, before that murdering dog shows up and puts an arrow in all your heads!”

The Captain hoists his battleaxe onto his shoulder and races back across the room and back into the shadows. The six of you are faced with the opportunity to venture an escape up through the dungeon and out of Castle Hood. Scultone’s voice inferred a great sense of urgency.

[sblock=Time to Proceed]You may remain in the cell if you have anything left to talk about. Otherwise, it might be prudent to follow his advice. Passive Insight checks suggest the Captain's truthfulness.[/sblock]

You are in a cramped cell. Most of this floor remains lit by the torch Captain Scultone left. This floor of the dungeon seems about 100 feet long, with two staircases at the opposite end of the room: one goes up, one goes down.

"Great Blackmoor's Beard I new the gods would see justice done." Torath says as he gathers up his pack and armor. Taking a look at his equipment he shakes his head and sheepishly asks, "Can anyone help me with this?"

Doren nodded to the Captian... knowing him as a honorable old and venerable dragonborn... he'd read stories of his heroics in times past and knew he was one he could trust.... Doren looked over to Torath and quickly helped him with the buckles of his armor and hoped the man would do the same for his chain... quickly he grasped his holy symbol of Blackmoor and wrapped it about his wrist and tossed his pack onto his back...

"Up or down my new-found friends?" Doren spoke softly as he pointed to the two staircases......

Baern quickly helps the others with their equipment. "Fancy Drake'll be on the surface," he says. "Up seems most logical. 'Course logic don't mean much of late..."
