Well, the answer is "Don't put that ability on a non-minion, because then it would be completely broken with their much higher durability." As-is, they may spawn a few extras, all conveniently bunched up in one spot already. Since they're minions, they all die to all sorts of auto-damage zones that any half-optimal party should be able to spit out.

Or just have them spawn minions.

A demon alchemy seems fine to me, since alchemy in fantasy seems to be a a skill about how long till you blow yourself up.

Is it just me, or is the old backstory (they're mysterious... wOoOo!) not incompatible with the new one (the mystery is... a demon did it. WoOoO!)?

Thought so myself. Not really that hard to fit them together.

The demon lord created them first.

The Neogi rediscovered the process through careful craftsmanship.

Not so difficult.

The neogi masters on the other hand...yeah. The change from huge, drooling killing machines to super smart leaders will take a bit of getting used to.

Then again, simply introducing a stupid variant of the neogi old ones that fits the old lore can pretty much fix the "problem".

About a demon of alchemy and artifice- someone has to build the demonic war engines, right?

Demons are destructive- the don't have the demeanor (demoner?) to to sit there and actually design and carefully craft something as intricate as a Clockwork Horror.

They would steal the plans and make slaves do the work.
