4th Edition Rumors

August of 2007 still wouldn't surprise me but losing the minis? I don't see that happening at all. These days, with piracy and computer games, they need toys to sell to us (and I say us because I buy the minis just like many others do).

We got more muchkins in the States I believe

*raises hand*

Munchkin here. :)

At present count I have somewhere around a couple hundred minis, and they look really good on the table, and are indispensible to our games. Plus, I've been using minis of some sort (from dice to Risk pieces) for about 20 years now.

Yeah, I don't believe for a moment that they'll ditch miniatures. I never buy the things--they're retardedly expensive, and you don't even know what you're buying--but WotC seems very invested in wargamey mechanics and the "collectable" business model (hell, these are the Magic: The Gathering people, after all).

Buy singles. Check out how much, say, a reaper pit fiend costs - about 15 bucks from an online store You can get a painted pit fiend from blood wars for 16 or so (probably 14 after the dust clears). A plastic troll runs you 3 dollars; you cant get an unpainted metal troll for that. A metal giant the size of the eldritch giant (9.00) from WODQ would run 20 dollars or more. Boosters *are* retardedly expensive, particularly at retail. I'm a pretty good painter, and I round out my collection with plastic figures because in many cases its cheaper.

<...> 4th Edition <...> rumors <...>
I have been pondering twice or thrice if I should open that thread just to mention how I have become tired of 4e rumors. Then, I considered that if I didn't do it, nobody would ever know that now I have determined to strictly avoid 4e threads. So I need to come here to tell it, even despite I am wondering if anyone will ever care about such a petty information. But be assured I didn't read anything of the other posts in this 4e thread. ;) :D

What if this was a rumor that there was going to be a miniatures-less version of 3.5 released, or a "campaign-style", or a variant where you don't need minis.

It doesn't have to be 4e for WOTC to decide that supporting mini nonusers can sell a book.

I personally would buy a set of core books where the mini and mini-related rules are stripped out. However, I doubt WotC would do that. Splitting up the game into what is arguably two different lines is akin to the D&D/AD&D split that helped screw TSR over years ago.

So today I heard a silly rumor that WotC has slated 3Q 2007 for Release of 4th Edition, and that miniatures will be out of the game and its back to just pencil and paper, anyone else heard these rumors or is my source pitching a pile from left field?

Not a chance on both counts.

I would be willing to bet we won't see 4e before GenCon 2008, and as I see more and more of the releases planned for next year, I'm starting to think 2009 might be more likely. I also expect we'll get plenty of notice, if only because Wizards would be wise to avoid releasing 4e while Paizo are running an Adventure Path, and in fact should try to coordinate with Paizo so that Dungeon can start a new Path with the first 4e issue of Dungeon.

They won't ditch the minis - those things make far too much money for Wizards to consider such a move. If anything, 4e will be far more mini-dependent than the current edition.
