Check out how much, say, a reaper pit fiend costs - about 15 bucks from an online store You can get a painted pit fiend from blood wars for 16 or so (probably 14 after the dust clears). A plastic troll runs you 3 dollars; you cant get an unpainted metal troll for that. A metal giant the size of the eldritch giant (9.00) from WODQ would run 20 dollars or more. Boosters *are* retardedly expensive, particularly at retail. I'm a pretty good painter, and I round out my collection with plastic figures because in many cases its cheaper.
Though given the choice between the great Reaper Pit Fiend and the craptastic plastic WotC one I went with the metal. While they were obviously models of the same creature the difference in appearance left me with no doubt as to which I would purchase.
The sad thing is that I don't even use the standard D&D devils in any of my games, I just really liked the Reaper mini, and thought that it would be fun to paint.
While I can no longer say that I have never had a package of the D&D Miniatures, since one came with the Player's Kit, I can say that I do not own any... I gave 'em all away.
