At present count I have somewhere around a couple hundred minis, and they look really good on the table, and are indispensible to our games. Plus, I've been using minis of some sort (from dice to Risk pieces) for about 20 years now.

I have it on good authority that 4E is going to be heavily dependent on the CCG model of game play, with dunegons laid out randomly using a set of pre-packed tiles.

I doubt that will be the default way of playing, but I would be willing to bet there's a random dungeon generation mechanism along those lines presented in the DMG, for those times when no DM is available. And I don't believe that that is a bad thing, either.

If you really had a problem, you'd know exactly how many minis you own, because you'd have them all carefully indexed in a spreadsheet or database .

I personally would buy a set of core books where the mini and mini-related rules are stripped out. However, I doubt WotC would do that. Splitting up the game into what is arguably two different lines is akin to the D&D/AD&D split that helped screw TSR over years ago.

Other than replacing any references to "spaces" with actual distances, what else would you want stripped out of such a book?

Yeah, I could play Dungeons & Diablo as a one-shot thing with my wife or our crew of non-/ex-gamer friends. Might be just the thing to drag 'em into a real campaign.

A certain very well-known d20 publisher (not sure if I should say who, but it was on the mailing list ogf-d20-l in August of this year, and I think the archive is public) claimed to have heard May 2008 from a source he considered "very credible". I'm inclined to believe that. (Of course, even if it's true, it's far enough off that a lot could change between now and then.)

As for removing the emphasis on miniatures, that part is ludicrous for the same reasons several others have already pointed out.
