(5.24 PBP) Vault of the Dracolich (IC) Redux

"It's made of the rock -- of the mountain itself...." Urgan says to no one in particular, but loud enough to be heard. But does it have a mind? he asks himself, unspoken.

Urgan is not by nature brave. He sees himself as an artist, and as a scholar. The thing had ignored the illusion he had tried to place in its mind, so now he reached out, psychically, assaying whether there was even a mind there he could exploit. A niggle, to distract or confuse this beast. Because Urgan was angry, at this crearture and at himself, regretting the loss of Scamp.

Urgan reached out with his thoughts, probing the mind of this monster.

OOC: Mind Sliver from where he is: DC 14 Int save or 1d6=4 points psychic damage and -1d4 from the next saving throw it makes before the end of the next turn.

Merrick moved to the Dracolich trying to get its attention. Not really sure how, he decided to hurt it. While the first attack was about to miss, Fate intervened and the dragon moved right into the path of the strike.

The second attack hit solidly.

Torhak was worried when the beast survived their first and best assault, especially once he saw it was made of stone. Such creatures were commonly resistant to physical damage. And mental too, which this one seems not to be.

Once enraged, he looked with approval as the Paladin used his power over earth in such decisive manner even if he found the dance fight too flashing for his liking.

Once Merrick and Urgan did their part, it was almost easy to jump up again, over the stone prison and stab at the same place where he already damaged the base of the neck. Heaving both weapons in scissoring action, he severs the connection between the body and the neck.

With a loud clatter, the stone bones fell apart as whatever magic animated them was severed with the neck

Shortsword attack vs dracolich: 2D20.HIGH(1)+6 = [9, 17]+6 = 23
1D6+3+1D6 = [1]+3+[4] = 8
Dagger attack vs dracolich: 2D20.HIGH(1)+6 = [19, 5]+6 = 25
1D4+4+1D6 = [1]+4+[3] = 8

9 and 8 damage, should be enough even of mental strike didn't take. Note the first roll error with +3

OOC: Urgan should focus more on support against magic resistant enemies

Team Lake

Bjorn sent a beam of silvery moonlight down upon the transporter. The cultist inside screamed and fell, while whisps of smoke came off the mercenary, who stepped out and to one side, hacking his sword at the giant frog in front of him.

Shade-9 stood statue-still and studied the glow of the red stone atop the transporter. Each of his observation came with a wide margin of error, but he concluded that though the red stone was likely to be a power source, it was also likely to be warded with protective magic, possibly impervious to conventional damage, and at any rate not at all fragile.

Loklafd and the other mercenary were locked in battle, with the big northman thrusting his spear and sliding in the mud to avoid the merc's vicious attacks with a hand-axe. The merc still held his crossbow in his off-hand, but was unable to bring it to bear in such tight space.

OOC: Bjorn took 8 slashing from M1's sword. Loklafd took 8 and did 9 to M2. @VLAD the Destroyer Darius to go to roll the round.

Again Shamal brought the big bone (stone?) Dragon down by enveloping it with the dirt and stone of the ground. It struggled to free itself as Merrick rushed in to run it through with his glaive. Rib bones broke and crumbled, but the tail broke free and it swung around hitting the young adventurer hard across the midsection.

Urgan sent a psychic attack to learn from its reaction - sure enough, it had a presence, but one that resisted his assault. But was it a copy of a personality, or a personality that controlled it remotely? It was impossible to tell, in particular with its magical defenses being quite strong.

As Torhak worked his way through the sliding earth that held the thing down, to get once more at its neck, a freed wing slashed across his back. Grunting with the pain, the dwarf dug deep and sawed at the same spot as his previous attack, and the great heavy head came free, collapsing to the ground and crumbling. Poisonous gases escaped from somewhere within, leaving a green noxious cloud around a pile of now-inert rocks.

OOC: Merrick took 12 Bludgeoning from the tail, which will knock him into the fighting pit if he fails a dc15 STR Save. Of course, if he makes the save, then he will be there for the poison cloud, which will either way get Shamal & Torhak, who will take 17 poison damage & be poisoned for 1 hour (dc15 CON Save for 1/2, no condition). Also, Torhak took 14 slashing from a claw.

"Well, that was nice while that lasted." Copper quips before quickly unleashing an arrow into a cultist and his sack of ball berrings onto the ground near him.
OOC: I'm gonna take you up on having opened the cage already.
Attacking cultist 2
Shortbow Sneak Attack from the shadows!: 2D20.HIGH(1)+4 = [14, 9]+4 = 18 3D6+4 = [5, 1, 4]+4 = 14
Using Fast Hands to spread ball berrings on AK 66, AK 67 AM 66 and AK 67, that should be just out of the bright light, so it might trip someone up.

Team Infiltrate

Copper, who had just finished unlocking the Drow's cage when "Lozant" had spoken elvish, took advantage of the initial chaos of recrimination that occurred when Lorent was accused of being false, to scatter his ball-bearings in between himself and the table. A few of them fell through a grating in the floor, and made splashing noises somewhere below, but most remained in the shadows cast by an iron brazier that hung on a chain from a wooden support over the table.

While Rowlow ordered the newcomers to gather in the light, a javelin came from the stairs, where Terrin lurked in the shadows. A cultist staggered, shouting in pain, and Copper took a swift and sudden bow-shot that silenced him.

Rowlow waved his hand and the other mercenary moved to deal with Copper. He stumbled on the ball-bearings, but managed to keep his footing well enough that he made two swipes at the goliath with a short sword.

Rowlow himself cranked back a heavy crossbow and yelled, "Getan! What's going on? Don't tell me you let that guy get the better of you!"

He crossed toward the stairs, and when he saw Getan's body lying on the stairs (shadowed enough that he could not immediately tell if the man was sleeping or dead) he also saw Terrin, hugging the wall. He called Terrin a terrible name with the filth that only a veteran mercenary (or a sailor) could manage, and he shot him with a heavy quarrel.

Behind Copper, the drow slipped out of the cage, only opening its door just wide enough to slip out. He mumbled something in his heavily-accented elvish, and the mercenary fighting Copper, as well as some of the ball-bearings, and the near end of the table, all began to glow in an eerie purple light.

OOC: Ouch. Terrin takes 17 from Rowlow's crossbow. He'll have to roll a Concentration Save. M2 didn't see the ball-bearings, but made the DEX Save. He got Copper for 3 & 3 Piercing with a short-sword. Stryke cast Faerie Fire, only got M2. Cultists to go! And @Neurotic Lerent and Sapphirion. (Though not C2. He's dead!)

The stone dragon collapsed, the rock of its substance fissuring and flaking and finally lying to rest, as a noxious gas rose up into the air.. It appeared that Scamp was the only casualty, though many were hurt and the yip-yiop=yipping of the kobolds continued to echo around him.

Urgan looked to the others, and tried to see where the Kobold Chief had gone. Did they still have the statue? Assuming they did, he proceeded...

The sudden appearance of the dracolich-not-dracolich called for further investigation: the kobolds had seemed as frightened and surprised as the group itself. When the gas cleared, Urgan steps forward and examines both the creature's remains, but also the teleporter itself. What had triggered this?

Team Caves

The kobolds were in awe - they could not have imagined that a thing that they thought was a dragon could be taken down so quickly. They had no idea what to do. They cowered, fled, shrieked, clutched at their faces, collapsed, and hid, variously. Urbone the Magnificent stood between his hut and the fighting pit, with an expression on his face that read "All is Lost".

After Urgan made sure that Shamal still possessed the Bhaalite Idol, he examined the remains of the creature. It smelled terribly as poisonous gasses lingered around it, but otherwise appeared little different from the crumbling rock of the mountain, like the ones outside that fell from the mountain's peaks. Perhaps it was a construct, or an imperfect simulacrum. The transporter was still active, but seemed to be powering down. He was pretty sure that stepping inside it would take him to wherever the Dracolich-thing had come from. But where that was, or how safe it would be, he had no idea.

OOC: @Kobold Stew. I rolled a few arcana checks for you. Hopefully that answers some of your questions.
