5' step between attacks

First Post
In our latest game, the question came up whether the monk could take a 5' step between his flurry attacks. Since the rules say you can take a 5' step between attacks in a full attack action, I said yes. But I figured I'd check in here and see if that is actually kosher with the RAW.

Can a monk take a 5' step between flurry attacks?

Can a dual fighter take a 5' step between attacks?

Can a archer take a 5' step between rapid shots?

Can a tripper take a 5' step between tripping and the follow-up attack?

Can a monk take a 5' step between flurry attacks? 1 5 ft. step, somewhere in there, yes

Can a dual fighter take a 5' step between attacks? 1 5 ft. step, somewhere in there, yes

Can a archer take a 5' step between rapid shots? 1 5 ft. step, somewhere in there, yes

Can a tripper take a 5' step between tripping and the follow-up attack? 1 5 ft. step, yes - but I fail to see how that could help - the follow-up attack has to be on the person you tripped....?

1) Can a monk take a 5' step between flurry attacks?

Yes.

2) Can a dual fighter take a 5' step between attacks?

Yes.

3) Can a archer take a 5' step between rapid shots?

Yes.

4) Can a tripper take a 5' step between tripping and the follow-up attack?

No.

The follow-up attack is resolved immediately. He could, however, trip, follow-up, 5', and trip again (with a follow-up, as required) if he wanted to, however.

Patryn saved me the trouble of typing all that. Ditto what he said.

Oh, a minor point of detail, however: If you have pounce or something else that lets you do a move and a full attack, then you can't use the 5-ft. step at all, of course; and usually, you'll have to make your move before all attacks.

The only thing I know of that allows a 5 ft step between attacks is the Dervish ability Dervish dance. You can only dance with a slashing weapon, though. I'm not sure if any of the monk weapons are slashing.

most importantly can a rogue back stab move 5' and do it again?

We have an 8th Assassin with silence Personal, invisibility & dual weild. He has in last nights game, killed 2 in one round, using his death strike 1st & a sneak attack 2nd. It was my ruling as the DM that although he studied both targets for 3 rounds that he could only "assassinate" one but he could excersise his sneak attack ability on the second , why? because they were standing next to each other. If they were more that 5' apart I would have ruled 1 only.....both targets were 3rd level guards by Nobles court.

Would you have ruled otherwise?

Anyone may take a single 5' step at any point in the middle of a Full Attack action (including when using a Whirlwind Attack).

Dervish Dancing allows you to take as many 5' steps as you want, limited to a total distance moved of your movement, and you must move before each attack.

Don't forget that you can take a 5' step between attacks during a Whirlwind Attack.

*edit* Dang you Patryn, you beat me to it!

Well, the question is, was he using invisibility, or improved invisiblilty?

The second guard would still be flat footed (and subject to sneak damage) even if the Rogue/Assassin became suddenly visible in the middle of their full attack action.

However, the initial Death Attack probably ought to have occurred in the 'Surprise Round' - which would only allow a single attack (unless the Rogue/Assassin was so sneaky as to dispatch the first guard without being noticed). However, if the Rogue/Assassin won initiative (likely) he could then do a full attack against the 2nd guard with sneak attack damage...
