As far as making something that is "rules legal," the DM has a ton of latitude in interpreting improvised actions; see the box on PHB page... 193! Holy crap, 200orcs was right!

I am telling you, it's weird, page 193 is the best starting page for looking up combat rules.

You get through a whole combat in one session? You must not be playing epic levels. :heh:

I think running 4e levels 21-29, 3 hour sessions, I managed to never have to end a session in the middle of a fight. But it wasn't easy and we certainly weren't doing more than one significant fight per session. Some took the whole 3 hours. That was with monster hp reduced - standards about 2/3, elites & solos 1/2.

Honestly, I kind of enjoyed 4E at lower levels. It wasn't what I would call D&D, but I saw the appeal.

But epic level play? Yeah ... a single person's turn could take an hour.

Wait, what? Limited how? The search functionality and filtering is something they knocked right out of the park!

Maybe it was bad when it first launched? I certainly don’t recall that being the case, but it’s possible. Definitely not the case as of right now.

Nah, I’m gonna side with writers over librarians on this one.

Use your books. Break in the spine, dog the ears, carry them in a back pocket, make notes in them.

If you’re someone who doesn’t hold on to books, and gives them away or trades them for more books at a used book store once you’ve read them, skip the notes part. Otherwise, your house ain’t a public library, it’s your house. They’re your books. They aren’t sacred artifacts, they’re copies of a book of which there are millions of other copies. If it isn’t a rare book, don’t worry about it.

Heresy!! Heresy!!!!!

Don’t listen to the bad man my pretties. I’ll keep you safe. :)

My biggest problem with D&d Beyond is that I can't sign into my account. It's paired with Twitch, which is tied into my Amazon account, but there's something mysterious going on that Amazon won't let me sign into Twitch. Twitch won't let me create a new password, etc. It's just a mess. One of my groups I'm DMing has created a campaign on it, and I can't even sign in to it.
Soon, you’ll be able to use a variety of authentification methods/sources/whatever the word is. Amazon and it’s subsidiaries are awful when it comes to authentification.

Hmm... you are correct. I recall having a lot of trouble looking up general rules questions (as opposed to statblocks or class writeups). However, it appears to have improved drastically since the last time I tried using it that way. Any esoteric thing I search for gives me something helpful in the top few search results.

Another sacred cow bites the dust!

yeah I asked my group, and apparently the search bar functionality was pretty bad at first. They used to get forum posts instead of compendium entries.

Never saw a turn take longer than about 15 minutes.

Search function is so good now I programmed Chrome to automatically use DND Beyond to search any time I type DND in the search bar, and the right thing comes up every time.

We limited a turn to 1 minute max., if we had a lot to do that session 30 seconds max. I don't know why people think 4e required long turn times, it was never an issue for us - even when we played a few epic one shots.
