Quickleaf Hey I got swamped this weekend and wasn't able to post. I had wanted to examine the spell book we had picked up from the auction house. Should I just get up a retroactive post. If you just want to move forward I can RP it once we rest again.

Let me be humble for a second and ask for help. I want to do a good job with my posts, but I'm having the hardest time getting the honorifics right. It seems like such a vital part of getting the voice of the setting. Like when someone mentions the Sheik, they follow it up with may his name be praised forever or similar. I keep hitting my head against a wall trying to come up with those as well as trying to figure out when they're best used. Do you use them whenever you mention a ruler or just the first time in a conversation?

Does anyone have any tips or is able to point me towards some resources to help me out with this. My googling hasn't been that successful so far.

And now you know why I picked to be a Saluk. That way I don't have to deal with all that crap. LOL

Actually, it was my bad. I forgot that you'd mentioned wanting to investigate the spellbook. I'll edit my latest post now to include the spellbook info and mention you there, sorry mate!

There's no "right way." Usually the elaborate honorifics are only used upon first meetings or when you're trying to talk someone up or flatter them. At least that's how I'd always played in my Al-Qadim games and how I'm running this one.

If you go back to the One Thousand and One Nights, there was a ton of flowery poetic language used for honorifics. Probably some of that was introduced by Burton and Western translators. There is no precise formulae.

For example, someone wanting to reference Sheikh Ali al-Hadd's heroic ancestry (his father created a coalition, overthrew a tyrant, and moved the tribe into the city of Tajar), might say "Sheikh Ali al-Hadd, Son of the Worthy, May Every Star in Heaven Smile Upon You".

Oh, that must be before the current IC thread then, part of the story with you and the sea mages. Drats.

Well, we shall see!
If that heckler was in a burgundy cloak, Lal would ask for a description ... I think that the best way to dig in the old posts would be to do a forum search but that will have to wait for me, harder to do on a smartphone.

Re honorifics: Lal isn't a local, and although he's a solid story teller, he doesn't have a good charisma or training in diplomacy. So he just spouts praise and hopes it will do...

Could who Lal is describing be the heckler I shut down in the square?

Yeah, so there was a database crash on ENWorld and we lost our original play thread which had the encounter with the heckler. So the current IC thread is actually a re-boot.

With the recent long rest, I used a loose interpretation of the "downtime" rules (A blend of my own GM intuition, the PHB, and Unearthed Arcana) to figure out what happened for each of your characters during the long rest. Since Lal was just resting (without any wounds/diseases), I decided to play up his "Discovery - One with the Universe" background feature as a sort of foreshadowing tool.
